General Information
'Bothies' is conveniently situated close by the school and within easy reach of other amenities on the island of Whalsay off the east coast of Shetland.

Often referred to as the 'Bonnie Isle', the island measures approximately 5 miles long by 2 miles wide, and has a population of around 1,000. In spite of its size and location, the island has excellent local amenities, far beyond what might be expected for an island of this size, most of which are centered around Symbister, the main settlement. Here there is a school, a couple of general stores including a post office, a doctor's surgery & care centre, and a marina and boating club in the harbour area, plus superb sporting amenities including a leisure centre with heated swimming pool, games hall, fitness suite, squash court & all weather sports field. Skaw, towards the north end of the island, is the location of Britain's most northerly 18 hole golf course.

Whalsay is linked to mainland Shetland via a regular subsidised ro-ro ferry service which runs throughout the day from the terminal at the harbour at Symbister, about a mile from the house, to Laxo / Vidlin, about 24 miles from Lerwick. Crossing time approx. 30 minutes.

'Bothies' was originally three houses providing accommodation for six families of the stone masons who built Symbister House (which is now the school).

The main house (1 Bothies) which is nearest the road, was originally single storey but had a first floor added in the 1960s. A large extension to the rear was added in 1988, and later a porch / conservatory in 1996. The house is fully double glazed and has oil-fired central heating provided by a 'Worcester Danesmoor' boiler in the adjoining annex '2 Bothies', the boiler also supplying the 'Megaflo' mains pressure hot water tank, both the boiler and hot water tank being installed in 2009. The shower room was re-fitted in 2010. The upstairs bathroom was re-fitted just last year.

The adjoining annex (2 Bothies) was completely renovated in 1998, then refurbished again in 2009 when a new shower room, roilet and kitchen were fitted. It too, is double glazed and is linked into the central heating system in the main house, although it has a separate electricity supply and telephone line. It currently has a Visit Scotland 3 star award and features in their literature. The furniture and contents in this property are available by separate negotiation which would be of particularly interest to anyone wanting to continue letting it out.

Finally, a third house (3 Bothies) adjoins the annex. This is presently simply used as a shed as it requires renovation, but does still have power, water and a telephone line.

Taken as a whole, the property provides extensive accommodation with lots of possibilities.
