The Story

Family barbecues on the terrace and picnics on lawn are some of Michael and Angela Chapman’s favourite memories of life at The Barns. They fell in love with the house 30 years ago, when it had been freshly converted into a family home.
“We were the first people to live in it,” says Michael. “We decided to buy it because it felt friendly, secure and welcoming and we loved the wide entrance hall. We knew as soon as we saw it that it would be perfect for a Christmas tree.”
They were right: one of their favourite photographs of the house shows it lit up from within, the Christmas tree shining through the big windows on to a snowy courtyard.

SUNNY DAYS
With thick walls and a roaring fire, The Barns has been the perfect winter hideaway, but it also comes into its own in the summer when the conservatory opens up on to the sunny garden.
“All the rooms are south west facing so we have a lot of sun in the conservatory. It moves around side of the house and we get it all day,” says Michael.
Outside in the garden a beautiful brass sundial on a stone pedestal tracks the path of the sun throughout the day. The sundial was there when Michael and Angela bought the house and is one of many beautiful features that give The Barns its special character.
“We also love the owl holes, which originally would have encouraged owls into the building. When we bought the house they had been filled in, but we had them opened up again and glazed so that you can see out through them,” he explains.

CALM AND QUIET
With so many original features, including feature brickwork in the hall and drawing room, the couple decided to keep the colour scheme simple, favouring whites and magnolia in order to let the original features speak for themselves.
“One of the things we love most is its calm feeling,” says Michael. “Even if you are in the house on your own, you don’t feel lonely. It is also private: none of the neighbours’ windows look into ours, and the house doesn’t open to the road: you drive off the road into the courtyard, which is very spacious and accommodates three cars.”

WELCOMING GUESTS
Michael has really made the most of the courtyard by inviting his classic car enthusiast friends around to chat and admire each other’s cars. He created extra space for his own collection by adding garaging for a third car, and the courtyard parking also comes in useful when guests are visiting for parties and family gatherings.
“We’ve had a lot of parties here over the years,” says Angela. “There’s a nice flow through the house from one room to another, so if you’re entertaining you can welcome guests into the central hall then they can go through into the dining room, sitting room and conservatory, all of which interconnect.”

FAMILY FUN
The layout of the house also proved perfect for raising children. The couple have especially fond memories of their two children playing in the garden, and now that their children are grown up, the house works beautifully for family get togethers.
“We had a big party here when our son returned from three years in Australia,” says Angela.
The dining room is large enough accommodate an eight seat table, and there are plenty of other sociable spaces for gathering with guests, including the kitchen breakfast room and the conservatory, which have lovely views into the garden.
Besides the practicality of the house, Michael and Angela have also loved its very distinctive appearance, including the spiral staircase that leads from the big hall to the upper floor.
“It looks lovely in the winter with baubles on it,” she adds.

WARM AND HOMELY
While The Barns has a spacious feel, one of its great strengths is that it also feels cosy, friendly and homely. Now that their children have settled in the Surrey area, Michael and Angela are planning to move there to be closer to them.
“We will probably buy a property in a more urban area, which means we’ll miss the countryside, going on country walks and all the changes you see through the seasons here. We'll also miss the house itself, there is something very comfortable, welcoming, secure and happy about it. I’ve never found another house that has all the elements that this one has.”

Setting The Scene

One of the things that Michael has loved about The Barns is that the garden, while beautiful, is also low maintenance, with a large lawn area roughly the size of a tennis court. It’s been ideal for summer picnics and provided their children with plenty of room to run and play.
Roses, primroses and geraniums add splashes of colour in the warmer months, and the garden is a real sun trap. It is bordered at the sides by tall, mature beech hedges with views over the surrounding countryside.
Besides an extensive garden, the property’s outdoor space includes a secluded terrace, which is perfect for entertaining. In the summer months, the conservatory doors can opened onto the garden.
“It’s a great area for wildlife,” adds Michael. "It’s a very relaxing place to be.”
