The Story

Nick Bagri can still remember the first time he and his wife, Gurbakish, set eyes on his family home nearly 10 years ago. “We came to view it on a wintery day and I remember the fire was burning, it was so warm and my wife and I just loved it,” he describes.
Greensleeves, built around the 1980s, is a spacious, detached bungalow with unique charm, set in stretching gardens. “It’s beautiful; you really have to look at it in person to appreciate it,” Nick says. “We have put so much effort into this house, to make it the exact home that we wanted, and to liven it up. I think it’s the character of the property that we’ve enjoyed the most.”

NATURAL LIGHT
The couple have tailored their home to their tastes over the years, with a series of transformations. “The garden needed quite a lot of work, so we cleared away some dead trees and tidied it all up,” says Nick. “Inside, we simply wanted to update everything to modern standards: we installed built in wardrobes, new bathrooms and kitchen, transformed the painting and décor, and repaired the conservatory.” The conservatory, stretching out from the kitchen dining room, is now a real showstopper: natural light floods through its enormous panes of glass, and yet, carpeted and well insulated, it is nonetheless a cosy space for relaxation. “It’s very spacious,” he adds. “And because it’s south facing you have a wonderful view across the garden.”

DESIGN DETAILS
Each room has been carefully designed, from the colour scheme of the walls to the soft furnishings. “It’s pretty modern, but not too contemporary, we wanted it to remain in keeping with the rural setting, so it has a modern countryside look,” says Nick. The reception room has a light grey shade on the walls with dark patterned wallpaper around the chimneybreast.
“We made each room quite individual and put our own stamp on it,” he notes.
The bedrooms each have a unique colour scheme but also feature neutral carpets and wooden flooring, bringing the overall look together. He adds: “We get a lot of compliments on the design.”

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE
Family life centres on the kitchen, where there is lots of space for keen chefs, a breakfast bar with seating for casual meals and a separate dining table. The space works brilliantly for entertaining as the chef can chat to guests while preparing food. The contemporary design of the room perfectly exemplifies the style of Greensleeves: sleek, black granite work surfaces complement the mosaic wall tiles and ceramic floor tiles, while CDA appliances finish off the polished look. “It’s painted white, which works well with the black tiling on the floor,” he points out.
Natural light flows from the conservatory through interior French doors. “And spotlights are embedded in the ceiling,” he adds.

FURTHER AFIELD
Nick and his family have found the location perfect. “It’s on a private road, but at the same time is just a 10 minute walk from the shops,” he says. “There are local schools and the bus stop, which can take you into Maidenhead or Windsor, is only about 300 yards away.” Maidenhead Train Station takes under 15 minutes to reach by car, and it takes less than an hour to drive into central London. But at the same time the property also boasts idyllic semi rural living. “It’s a really prime location,” he says. “Each of the properties along the road is entirely unique; they are all homes with character, so it’s just a lovely place to live. It is quiet and peaceful, and in summer time, with the greenery all around, it’s fantastic.”

FAMILY LIFE
With an abundance of space, the home has been wonderful for family life. “My son always had his birthday parties here, and even though he is older now, his friends will still come round to play football in the garden,” Nick says. “Entertaining is so easy here because it’s private you don’t disturb anyone else.” He continues: “My older son has moved away and the youngest is going to university next year and so as the house sits on 1.5 acres we feel we’re ready to downsize now.” Nick and Gurbakish will be sad to leave their family home, but he adds that there comes a time to move on. “We want to pass the house to someone else who will enjoy living here as much as we have,” he explains. “It’s been a wonderful family home. It’s beautiful.”

Setting The Scene

Set on a private lane, Greensleeves is approached by a pebbled driveway, with 1.5 acres of gardens backing onto farmland and an integral garage.
“In the summertime, my wife and I are just outside all the time,” says Nick.
“We’ve always enjoyed maintaining the garden ourselves.”
One section of the garden sits back a little from the property, home to a charming little vegetable patch. The left hand side of the fence has shrubbery planted along it, and in keeping with the countryside setting, Nick and Gurbakish have planted some fruit trees.
“And in the right season all the daffodils bloom,” he adds.
