The Story

When Javaid and Parveen Akhter stepped into the garden at The Cottage, they knew this was where they wanted to live for the rest of their lives.
The pretty five-bedroom house was tucked away on a private lane, in a plot of 0.5 acres, and was bordered by trees and shrubs.
"It had a real sense of privacy," said Javaid. "We just fell in love with the position and the impressive garden. It was surrounded by mature trees and felt very secluded."
He added: "We bought the place really looking forward to living here and making it our long-term home. We were even planning to have a new house built on the site but sadly our circumstances have changed and we cannot stay.
"We are extremely disappointed. This was going to be perfect for us; a wonderful, quiet setting, within commuting distance."

PAST AND PRESENT
The Cottage was built around 1925, on land once owned by the Norwood Farm estate. The Ahkters, who have lived at the house for three years, have all the original documents, handwritten and signed by Baron Anslow.
"What is also interesting is that there are only three houses in this vicinity, on this private lane, and only one has been sold in the last 40 years - and that was when we bought this one!" said Javaid.
He went on: "When we bought this place we were thinking in terms of building a new home. We did minor alterations while we were making our plans but we did aim eventually to build a six-bedroom house with an orangery, annexe and swimming pool."

FAMILY AND FRIENDS
In the meantime, however, rooms in the existing house were opened up and central heating was installed.
"It has been a lovely family home for us," he continued. "It has also been superb for entertaining. When we moved in, one of the first things we did was to have a party with about 50 people.
"It was lovely - everyone mingled and really enjoyed themselves. There is also plenty of parking here - you can have 20 to 30 cars and still feel there is ample space."
The house itself feels spacious too, with plenty of room for the family to spread out.
"Because it is central, the kitchen is very much the hub of the house," he said. "We also spend a lot of time in the drawing room, which has a triple aspect and an open fire.
"In the winter, we get into the habit of roasting all sorts of things on the fire!"

COUNTRY AND CITY
It takes Javaid just 15 or 20 minutes to commute to Ealing - and it takes about the same time again to get into central London.
"It is very easy to travel by train or to get to the main motorways - the M4, M40, M25 and M1 - to get further afield," he said.
"Yet you feel like you are in the countryside because it is so green and so quiet."
He said the family will miss spending time in the magnificent garden and just soaking up the ambience of their home.
"We really do not want to leave. We love it here so much," he added.
