General
The fellwalkers writer, Alfred Wainwright, at one time considered living here and it was undoubtedly one of his favoured villages. In his book, Westmorland's Heritage, he writes 'Orton is one of the loveliest of Westmorland's villages. A delightful rural settlement built around a central green with two streams crossed by many footbridges and having numerous venerable buildings and a fine church on a hill overlooking tranquil countryside'.

The surrounding countryside is indeed very beautiful and unusual in having large tracts of unfenced land providing a huge variety of interesting walks. This has recently been recognised and on 1 August 2016, Orton Parish will be placed in the Lake District and Dales National Parks.

The village is fortunate in retaining many of the services lost in recent years by other rural communities. There is a village school, shop/post office, surgery, church, chapel, inn, tea rooms, small artisan factory producing a now f...

Orton Hall
The Jacobean mansion of Orton Hall is believed to date from 1662 and is Grade II listed.

In more recent times, this imposing property has been sympathetically renovated and converted whilst retaining superb oak panelling, stone mullioned windows and open fireplaces. The oak panelled walls and ceilings are a particular feature of Orton Hall and greatly contribute to the overall atmosphere of historic grandeur which permeates the property.

Electrically operated double entrance gates opening on to a sweeping drive create the sense of arrival at a rather special property.

Rutland
Rutland is a fascinating two bedroomed residence created from the far north wing of the mansion. This gives it a greater degree of exclusivity being a little distance from the principal residence. It is entirely on the ground floor with the accommodation having an interesting elliptical shape culminating in the west facing garden room with its fine Gothic window.

In addition, the property has an entitlement to entertain guests in the magnificent Great Hall, together with the use of laundry and cellars.

The surrounding grounds are a lovely feature, extending to approximately 6½ acres and offering unrestricted access. They are meticulously managed and comprise formal period lawns with fine trees etc. Some wilderness areas act as nature reserves and are home to red squirrels, roe deer and interesting bird life.

The accommodation is highly adaptable and suitable for permanent or holiday occupation, whilst at the same time Rutland make...
