The Story

In the summer the leafy green trees and the rolling hills just stretch on and on into the distance and in autumn everything becomes a glorious sea of red, orange and gold.
The current owner of The Chateau moved to the Llandogo house in 1993, when it was still relatively newly built, after she and her husband agreed it was perfect for them in every way.
“My husband needed easy access to Cardiff for his job and this location was perfect,” she recalls. “As well as being an easy drive from the city it also offered us the views we were looking for. We had come from Cornwall and were used to being in a beautiful setting and this one was in incredible. The house was in a village in the Wye Valley, in an elevated position looking out across the river, the valley and the trees. We could tell it would be a lovely place to live through all the seasons, I’ve even got wonderful pictures that I took out when it snowed.”

MAGICAL VIEWS
Although The Chateau is a modern home, it has an appealing, characterful exterior, designed to blend in well with its surroundings. Inside, it is a good size and has been redecorated and carefully maintained over the years. Arranged over two floors, it has a double garage at lower ground floor level, with a superb terrace or balcony above.
“This is a beautiful place to eat out in the summer and to just sit and take in the views, you can see right over to St Briavels,” she admits. “There is plenty of space out here for guests too: we have had some great family get togethers out here over the years.”

FAMILY SPACE
With two children and eight grandchildren, they wanted a home that could accommodate plenty of overnight guests.
“This house has four good size bedrooms; two of these have en suite bath or shower rooms and then there is a family bathroom. I love the master bedroom because it is so large and has such a lot of storage space, as well as its own bathroom,” she points out. “My daughter and her family can have the other en suite room when they stay, leaving my son with his own bedroom and the family bathroom. The fourth bedroom has been ideal for the children to use.”

SUMMER SUN
The ground floor of the house includes the spacious drawing room, with its doors that open up on to the terrace.
“This is lovely in the summer when we have a table and chairs, and sunbeds out there, everyone can just wander in and out.”
There is also a dining room, study and cloakroom, together with the kitchen breakfast room and utility room. The kitchen has space for a table where casual meals can be taken.

PICTURESQUE SURROUNDINGS
The stunning Llandogo setting has given the owner great pleasure. The village is a friendly place and she has enjoyed looking out at her picturesque surroundings and seeing sheep and even a donkey in the field opposite every day.
“I love the area and have had a superb time here. I am only moving now to be closer to family but this is one of those places where you feel welcome as soon as you arrive,” she points out. “There are so many wonderful places to visit close by, including Tintern Abbey, which is just spectacular. The River Wye is just down to the front of us and is a lovely place to walk.”

A LUCKY FIND
Travelling to Chepstow, Bristol, Gloucester and other parts of the country is also easy.
“The bus service from here is good and you can get to the motorways easily,” she says. “Cardiff and Bristol are both great for shopping and I do like Abergavenny and Cwmbran too. It is nice to go over to Weston and Brean sometimes; my family live in Somerset and Devon and it is convenient to get down there from this location.”
She adds: “Everyone tells me it will be hard to find a home like this when I leave and I know they are right. We were very lucky to find a house that was in such a beautiful setting and was so convenient too.”

Setting The Scene

The front garden at The Chateau is a spectacular elevated terrace, which offers generous outside dining and entertaining space, and is an extremely private place from which to enjoy the views. The pretty rear garden includes a terrace area and a lawn, with an array of shrubs and trees.
The garage is to the front of the house, at a lower level. It is very large, with a huge loft space and could easily be converted into useable space with a mezzanine floor (subject to the relevant planning permissions).
