DESCRIPTION East Hele is a splendid former Devon longhouse which is believed to date in part to the 16th Century. The property has been extended over a number of years to provide a beautifully located and elegant family home.
The longhouse is a Grade II listed building of Architectural and Historical interest. The main property is of cob and stone construction under a partially hipped thatch and slate roof; the thatch has been recently rethatched. There are many period features illustrating its history which include leaded light windows, stone and oak mullions, beamed walls and ceiling, plank and muntin screen, decorative and moulded plasterwork and exposed stone work. The property benefits from a range of quality fixtures which include Philippe Starck sanitary ware and a hand crafted kitchen with Aga.
The house has been beautifully extended into what was an adjoining barn with a particular eye for detail. The extension incorporates a spectacular garden room with exposed king post trusses and multiple glass panel with superb views overlooking the garden and the countryside beyond. The extension incorporates many fine details such as recessed low voltage lighting, skirting lighting, modern oak architraves and doors and under floor heating. The north wing has the potential to be created into an annexe.
The gardens and grounds have been extensively landscaped to create a pleasing and wonderful background to the house which include formal gardens with tree lined avenues and borders, orchard, productive kitchen garden and terrace, which make the most of the extensive views. Several ponds divide the formal gardens from the pasture land along with a Ha Ha constructed from Cornish stone.
East Hele is a fine family home with its commanding and delightful position.

GARDENS & GROUNDS The quiet country lane gives access to a gravelled courtyard through double oak gates, which is located on the northern elevation of the property. From the courtyard, steps lead to a paved terrace with a stone covered barbeque area with stores at either end. The boiler house adjoins the eastern store, and houses an automatic oil fired boiler, pressured water system and tanks.
On the opposite side of the lane is a recently built barn which incorporates Workshop and Store with Games Room above. In front of the barn is a gravelled Forecourt area which leads to an Orchard planted with a wide variety of traditional trees including plums, cherries, apples, quince, walnut and cobnuts.
The undulating lawns have been planted with a mixture of native trees to include oak, horn beam, horse chestnut and birch. Two ponds linked by a stream compliment the tree planting and are surrounded by wildflowers when in season. The stream proceeds through the land before reaching a tributary of the River Mole.
A Cornish stone ha ha separates the garden from the pasture land. The pasture land is well fenced with post and rail fencing and gently slopes towards Hele Wood on the southern boundary. The pasture land has been planted with parkland and native trees with an enclosed boundary walk.
The garden, due to its high standard, has been opened under the National Garden Scheme; with its blend of informal and formal planting, it provides all year round interest and colour, complimenting the farmhouse and the stunning views.
From the courtyard, on the western side of the house, steps lead to the former stables with adjoining store which leads to the Kitchen Garden & Herb Garden with fruit cage and raised vegetable beds. There are a range of log stores and compost bins.
To the west of the house is an All Weather Tennis Court with electricity supply. A terrace surrounds the front of the property, taking advantage of the southerly views. The terrace is bordered by box hedging which surround mature borders stocked with a variety of roses as well as ornamental shrubs. Mature hornbeam hedges enclose a further lawn, with beautiful pleached lime tree walk.
