PROPERTY SUMMARY

THE STORY

From the outside, the house almost had fairytale like appeal and on the inside it offered wonderful space for a growing family.
"We came here 18 years ago after deciding we wanted to move closer to the countryside to bring the children up," the current owner explains. "This was one of just four houses in a small development and it had a unique style, with attractive bricks and roof tiles, as well as a pretty bay window, which almost looks like a turret. Inside it offered fantastic space for us - we had two children at that point but went on to have our daughter, who is now 16, while we were here."
She adds: "The location was perfect for us and finding a house like this was the icing on the cake."

BRIGHT INTERIOR
The substantial Wickham Bishops home had five bedrooms when the family arrived but in 2002 they carried out a loft conversion.
"We made the fifth bedroom on the first floor into space for the stairs and a study area," she explains. "Then on the top floor we created two more bedrooms and a shower room."
At the same time, work was carried out downstairs to open the kitchen up into a former study to create a family breakfast area.
"We redecorated the house too, keeping it very neutral and bright so we could bring colour in through furnishings and accessories."

A WARM WELCOME
The ground floor of the house features a large drawing room and dining room, as well as the kitchen breakfast room, utility room and cloakroom.
"The sitting room is very comfortable; it has a nice fireplace and French windows, with views on to the garden," she says. "I do spend most of my time in the kitchen and breakfast room, however, where there is a table and chairs, and a small sofa. It is a good family room and when friends drop round for a cup of tea that is where we tend to sit."

HIGHER THINKING
The generous first floor includes the spacious master bedroom, with its walk-in dressing room and en suite shower room. One of the family or guest rooms also has an en suite shower room and there is a family bathroom, with a bath and shower.
"I do like my bedroom," she admits. "My daughter's bedroom, which has the bay window, is also lovely because it is so light and has its own bathroom."
She continues: "One of the rooms on the top floor currently has a snooker table in it - the other one has a sofa and is also a great space for the children when they have their friends over. The top floor as a whole is a good teen space."

DELIGHTFUL GARDEN
There have been so many happy times in the house and garden at Bishops Place.
"We have had 18th birthday parties here for the boys and lots of family gatherings - because the house is nice and spacious it can accommodate lots of visitors very easily."
The sitting room and kitchen open up on to a sunny entertaining terrace and then the lawn. A second seating area in the corner of the garden offers an alternative place to sit as the sun moves during the day.
"We have a beautiful wall in the garden, which makes a very attractive feature; we also have some nice stones along the edges of the garden and I like to have lots of colourful pots outside in the spring and summer too."

CENTRAL POSITION
Wickham Bishops itself has given the family everything they were hoping for when they started their new life in the village.
"It has been fantastic - the children went to the local primary and then on to the secondary school in the area and have been very happy here," she says. "There has always been plenty for them to do, including tennis and football clubs, and because this is such a central location is has been easy to get to other places too. I often go to Maldon or Witham to go shopping, as well as Chelmsford, and there are lots of nice places to walk if you have dogs, such as Heybridge Basin, and lots of lovely pubs."
She adds: "Living here has been so easy for all of us. It is a good place to be if you have to commute into London and yet is great if you like the countryside too. This house is in a great position, and is spacious and attractive-looking too."

SETTING THE SCENE

Bishops Place is an exclusive development and this property has its own driveway for off-road parking, as well as an integral double garage.
At the back, the house opens on to a sun terrace, with plenty of space for outside dining furniture. There is also a lawn for children to play out on. The garden is bordered by a very attractive brick wall.

A more extensive choice can be found in the nearby town of Maldon and also in Witham, which is on the main railway line into London Liverpool Street (from 43 minutes) and where there is access to the A12. Particulars prepared for the sale of the house in the 1920's stated "occupying what is generally admitted to be the finest position in the county of Essex and possibly in the eastern counties".
