"The house has quite a modern style," says the other owner. "It is very light and features lots of neutral shades throughout." The kitchen was there when they arrived and is also bright and modern. "It was a bespoke design, with high gloss units, which was installed by the previous owners but still looks very contemporary."

GOOD LIVING SPACE

Today the ground floor of the house features a large drawing room, which reaches from front to back of the house and opens out into the conservatory. There is a family shower room on the ground floor, as well as two bedrooms, one of which has an en suite shower room.
"The kitchen leads through into the conservatory as well: it is a large conservatory, which was here when we moved in. We have a small table in there where we like to sit and have our breakfast in the morning, looking out on to the garden and listening to the sound of the birds."

FRIENDS AND FAMILY

The property does offer great flexibility. The current owners turned one of the bedrooms into a dining room but this could equally become a study, playroom or additional bedroom once more. The generous bedroom accommodation makes it easy to welcome overnight guests. Guests can be given their own space up or downstairs. Equally, new owners with teenagers could decide to give their older children the whole of the upper floor, perhaps using one of the bedrooms as a sitting room or study. "All the bedrooms are quite large. The master bedroom downstairs has high ceilings and the rooms upstairs are both very long. It works well for us having a former bedroom as a dining room as we like to have somewhere separate to sit down to eat when friends or family are over."

INSIDE AND OUT

The couple have enjoyed being able to entertain comfortably both inside their home and out in the garden during the warmer months. "We had our daughter's wedding here, which was a lovely occasion, and every summer we hold lots of barbecues for friends - we have a large terrace, where there is plenty of space to sit outside, and we are not overlooked in the back garden so it feels quite private," he says. "At Christmas there are usually about 15 of us here and every year we host a fireworks party, with about 40 or 50 guests."

LEISURE TIME

The semi-rural setting of the house has given the owners good access to their countryside surroundings. They enjoy heading off on footpaths for long walks or taking a stroll around the nearby country park. "If you like riding, there are stables nearby, and, for those who like fishing, we are close to lakes. I enjoy playing golf and there are two excellent courses with a 10-minute drive." The village, which has two pubs and a primary school, is just 15 minutes' drive from Epping, Ongar, Brentford and Romford, he points out. There is good access to the A12 and the M25. "We have been very happy here and have enjoyed everything we have done here," he says. And his wife adds: "We will be moving somewhere smaller now and will miss all the space we have here. This has been a wonderful place to live."
