The Story

In overseeing the design and build of their spectacular new house on Bryn View Avenue, Nichola and Gareth John were able to create the home of their dreams.
Their stunning contemporary home was designed to offer everything they wanted, from its indoor swimming pool to its stylish, state-of-the-art living areas.
“We were living a mile down the road when we bought this land 10 years ago,” Nichola recalls. “We had been thinking for some time about building our own home and this plot was ideal. It was in a quiet location, tucked away on a private estate, where all you can hear is the sound of the birds singing in the trees. Yet at the same time it is just a short walk to the train station or the village centre, it could not have been better for us.”

BESPOKE HOME
The Johns have always loved cutting edge contemporary design and knew they wanted to build an ultra-modern home, finished to an exceptionally high standard.
“We have always enjoying reading home and architecture magazines and we wanted something with lots of straight lines,” she explains. “Inside and out, it had to have absolutely everything we wanted, if we were going to build a house then we were going to give it 110 per cent. We wanted it to have a really spacious feel, with lots and lots of light flooding in from all directions.” Individual features were worked carefully into the design of the overall space. These included a beautiful, bespoke staircase, which sweeps up to a galleried landing. “I wanted the hall to be the main focal point and then to lead seamlessly into the different living areas,” Nichola explains.

LIFE OF LEISURE
To one side is the utility room, office and garage. The kitchen, breakfast room and living area are very much at the heart of the house. The bespoke kitchen features Italian units, Corian work surfaces and high specification appliances ranging from an American fridge/freezer to an integral coffee maker.
“The kitchen is very much like the ones you see on Saturday morning cooking programmes, with excellent food preparation areas and plenty of space for people to chat to you as you cook.” But there is also a firm focus on leisure and entertainment at the home. “On the other side of the house there is an entertaining room, which my husband uses as a gym and my daughter’s playroom, and then the swimming pool,” she explains.
A door leads back to the kitchen breakfast and family room area. This is open plan and split level: “We have a dining area here, where we can seat 12 people, and bi-folding doors on to the garden.”

SUMMER SUN
The whole property has been designed for easy and luxurious living. Indoor living spaces open beautifully on to outside areas, which have been given just as much care and consideration. “The outdoor areas are very contemporary too, with special features such as picture frames and chandeliers. The bi-folding doors on to the pool can be pulled right back in the summer and when the sun streams in it is just like being outside.”

FLEXIBLE LIVING
Spiral stairs from the pool area lead up to a first floor space, which is currently used as an additional sitting room but could also make an ideal bedroom. “There are doors from here on to the large roof terrace, where we have a barbecue area and hot tub. There is also a kitchen here with integrated fridge/freezer. I have worked from home, using one of the bedrooms and this part of the house, and it has been ideal. This house is very adaptable, it does offer great flexibility and choice as to how you use the different areas.”

PEACE YET CONVENIENCE
The sumptuous bedrooms offer magnificent space for both family and guests. The master suite has French doors leading on to the balcony, as well as a sunken double bath and an en suite bathroom, with has his and hers sinks and a walk-in double shower. The family bathroom has a Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen style sink and oval bath. “This has been a lovely place to welcome friends and family, the house is so large and flows so well that it can accommodate lots of people. We have also really enjoyed entertaining outside, when we were married we had 200 guests and a marquee in the garden, which was wonderful.” With such good access to the A470, it has been easy for visitors and work colleagues to travel to Ystrad Mynach, and yet the family have also relished the peace it has offered them. “We will miss living somewhere with so much privacy, somewhere that feels so secluded yet is so close to the village and everything else we need,” Nichola adds.

Setting The Scene

The house at Bryn View Avenue has been designed to offers luxurious outside living as well as exceptional indoor spaces.
The garden to the rear is decked, with wooden sleeper steps leading down to another open entertaining space and there is a children’s play area.
There is a generous driveway leading to the double garage.
