The Story

Sitting out on his terrace, looking down his long, green garden, the owner of Wytch Holme remembers exactly what it was about the property that tempted him to buy it about five years ago.
“I loved Bournbridge Lane, where the house was situated,” he explains. “It is a quiet semi-rural location yet it is convenient for getting into Ongar, Harold Hill and into London. It is a good location for getting on to the M25 and the M11 yet when you are sitting out in your garden at the back it is very peaceful.”
Built in 1972, the semi detached property was surprisingly spacious, stretching back to include good living space, as well as its lengthy garden.
“I went on to remodel and redecorate the whole interior of the house and to give it a completely different look and feel,” he adds.

MAJOR CHANGES
Today the house is entered from the side of the property via the kitchen/dining room. The main drawing room, with its large window, is to the front of the house.
“There were two street doors when I arrived here but this seemed unnecessary so I bricked one up and blended it in with the front of the house,” he explains. “I also made a new drive at the front of the house and I extended the garage at the back so I could create a log store as I also added a wood-burning stove.”

LIGHT HOUSE
Other work saw him remove an oil tank from the garden and fit a new combi-boiler, which he then tucked away out of sight in a cupboard, and put in a new staircase.
“My aim with all the work I have carried out here was to make the house feel lighter and much more modern, as well as being somewhere that was comfortable and easy to live.”
At the front of Wytch Holme, the drawing room is now a light and welcoming space. It has been decorated in cream shades and has room for a sofa and armchair in which to relax, watch television and enjoy the cosy glow of the wood-burning stove in the winter.
“I also have bookshelves in here so I can sit and read in there in the evening.”

FAMILY DINING
The kitchen dining room is a well designed space, with a dedicated food preparation area at one end and section for dining at the other. Here there is space for a table and chairs, and French doors open on to the garden.
“I created this space and it does work very well,” he says.
This part of the property could be very good family room and good for entertaining too.
“Like the rest of the house, it does have some character as well as feeling quite modern. I had a new kitchen fitted, which has lots of space for storage.”

LOFTY HEIGHTS
Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The largest bedroom has fitted wardrobes and is extremely light.
“I converted the loft into an additional bedroom space and slept up there myself when my son came to stay. It is a good size and, again, it is very light.”
The smaller bedroom on the first floor could be ideal for a child or even as a study for someone looking to work from home. Like the living spaces, the bedrooms have been decorated in light shades and carefully finished with new skirting boards. They are now ready and waiting for new owners to move straight into and possibly add their own colour through furniture and furnishings.

SUNNY GARDEN
The garden is something of an extension of the living space at Wytch Holme. French doors open right up on to the terrace, which has been extended by the current owner. Steps rise up to the long lawn, which has been well maintained.
“It is nice to be able to sit out here when the weather is warm,” he says. “There is plenty of room for a table and chairs.”
While he enjoys the lush green of the lawn and the general leafiness of his wider surroundings he appreciates new owners may well wish to take the garden further.
“It is a blank canvas and could be developed further by someone, it is a nice sunny garden,” he adds.

Setting The Scene

To the front of Wych Holme there is a generous drive, offering ample off street parking. There is also a car port to the left of the house. At the back of the property there is a surprisingly long grassy garden, with a newly completed terrace and steps up to the lawn.
