The Story

When the owners of the house on Woodlands were looking for their family home, now nearly 36 years ago, it was the location that first attracted them.
“There is a good selection of schools in the area, which was really important to us,” one of them says. "It’s in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, at the heart of the Wye Valley.”
The Narth translates from Welsh as “a clearing in the woods”, perfectly describing the tranquil feel of the village.
“Although it’s a big clearing it still has that feeling of being close to nature,” he adds.
“You can see the woods from the bedroom window and from the garden. It’s an ideal environment.”

ABUNDANCE OF SPACE
When the couple moved in, the home on Woodlands was a new build. But they have since made changes.
“It’s a brilliant family home, with lots of space, and we’ve really developed it around what our family needed.”
They extended the house around eight years ago, taking it from a four bedroom property to a five bedroom home, with an insulated garage.
“We also added a studio for my wife who does dressmaking and paints,” he adds.
Features like the charming Juliet balcony in the master bedroom, overlooking the garden, add special touches here and there.
“There’s a neutral colour scheme running through the interior, with hardwood floors and an oak staircase.”

A WELCOME HOME
With five bedrooms and three en suites, there is also plenty of room to host guests.
“It’s one of those very relaxed, warm homes,” explains the owner. “We moved here from a town setting, having not lived here before, so we really encouraged our friends and family to come and visit.”
She adds: “But when people have visited once, they love it so much they come back again and again, it’s a bit like running a bed and breakfast!”
Her husband agrees: “I’ve always done a lot of travelling, but when I come back here it feels like being on holiday.”

ENTERTAINING EVERYONE
With a spacious kitchen, including a charming breakfast bar area, and a choice of reception rooms, the home at Woodlands is ideal for entertaining.
“The dining room and reception room are joined by an archway, so it creates a very large room for entertaining friends and family,” explains the owner.
His wife adds: “And it was also brilliant for when the children started entertaining, as they got older. They could have their guests in that side of the house, and we would be in the smaller reception room with the television on, in the peace and quiet.”
French doors lead from both the television room and the other reception room out to the garden.
“For my 50th birthday we had a marquee in the garden. There have been so many parties over the years; some I think with around 80 guests.”

CONVENIENT LOCATION
The owners have found the location incredibly convenient.
“Within an hour’s drive you can reach Bristol, Cardiff, Hereford, and Gloucester, so there are great opportunities for shopping, eating out and activities, as well as transport links, with airports in Bristol and Cardiff. It really is well connected.”
But there is also plenty to enjoy in the surrounding area, from the famous Abergavenny Food Festival, to Monmouth’s week long musical festival.
“And there’s quite a good social life here in The Narth, if you want to join in. The village hall hosts lots of events and clubs.”

RURAL IDYLL
There are also superb walks close by, with some stunning scenery.
“The Wye, is a beautiful river running from Monmouth to Chepstow and we’re situated right in the heart of that,” explains the owner. “So there are some beautiful walks in the area, especially along the Wye Valley; you can go one way to Wales and the Brecon Beacons, and the other way to England and into Somerset and Gloucestershire.”
With such picturesque and varied landscape, it is no wonder the owners will miss the location of their home.
“We’ll definitely miss being so rural, it’s a lovely lifestyle here, doing the things you want to do in a relaxing environment,” they add. “We have lovely clear skies, you can see all the stars at night.”

Setting The Scene

The garden is mostly laid to lawn, with some planting in the flowerbeds.
“We have some rhododendrons, hydrangeas, and plum trees, plants which reflect the area,” says one of the owners. “And we also have a spacious shed and a vegetable patch, so it’s brilliant for gardening.”
With a large terraced area, the outdoor space is also perfect for entertaining.
“We spend a lot of time out there, especially if the weather is good for a barbecue,” he adds. “It’s beautiful, it is sheltered because of being in a clearing in the woods, and its a wonderful sun trap.”
