The Story

From the outside, Laurels looks every inch the impressive Victorian house, upon stepping inside, however, visitors find a completely contrasting home.
The impressive period property dates back to the late 1800s and has been renovated and upgraded to a superior standard by its current owners.
“It is a lovely old Victorian house and we have kept some of the original character features because we love them so much,” she says. “But we also wanted to modernise the house inside and give it a much more contemporary style and design throughout, we wanted to mix the old with the new and we feel it has worked very well.”

STYLISH SPACE
After buying Laurels, the couple carried out two side extensions and opened up some ground floor space to create a spacious kitchen/dining room for both family living and entertaining.
They then worked their way through the house, brightening up rooms and giving every room a superior finish. Each space was carefully considered to ensure it was comfortable, as well as stylish.
“One of the side extensions also allowed us to make the kitchen larger,” explains the owner. “It also gave us more space upstairs, where we were able to create a dressing room and another en suite bathroom.”

BEAUTIFUL ORANGERY
At the back of the house, the kitchen has a sleek finish. It has been fitted with a range of high end modern wall and floor mounted units, as well as granite work surfaces and a range of high specification fittings and appliances, including two ovens, a built in microwave oven, an integrated wine cooler, a dishwasher, a built in ceramic hob and a central island, with breakfast bar. The kitchen opens into a dining area, where family meals are taken, and this in turn gives on to a beautiful orangery.
“The orangery is south facing and enjoys the sun until about 8pm at night,” she says. “It is lovely, it has windows on all sides and is always bright and airy.”

INVITING ACCOMMODATION
The master bedroom is another very light room. With three windows in its attractive bay, the light just comes streaming in.
“There is a lovely view from here: you can see right out over Newbridge and Oakdale, and there are lots of trees,” she says. “The master bedroom’s bathroom is also wonderful and has a fabulous bath.”
The property now has four bedrooms, two of which have two en suite bath or shower rooms. There is also a family bathroom. There is also a detached annexe, with its own sitting room, kitchenette, shower room and bedroom. This could be ideal for anyone with extended family or with grown up children wishing to stay at home but to have their own space and independence.

SUMMER EVENINGS
Inside and out, the property offers a high degree of flexibility.
“This house is very well arranged now, with lots of space for the family and for guests too,” she says.
Laurels was certainly designed with entertaining in mind, in addition to the sumptuous spaces inside there is a substantial sun terrace, with plenty of room for comfortable seating and dining furniture.
“We also have an area of decking, with a hot tub, which has been lovely,” says the owner. “Because it is south facing, we can sit outside in the garden until late in the evening in the summer, just enjoying the sunshine.”

PICTURESQUE PLACE
The property is set in a highly desirable area of Blackwood, with good access to shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs, as well as schools. It is ideally situated for reaching Cardiff and Newport, and has easy access to the A470 leading towards the Brecon Beacons and to the M4 in the direction of Bristol and London.
“This is a lovely place to be: we can get to everything in Blackwood very easily from here but can also get to other places when we need to,” she says. “You can go walking or cycling from here, we like to go for a ride out on the cycle path opposite sometimes, and there is a very good local gym.”
She adds: “We have been very happy here and often think that this is the nicest place in Blackwood to live.”
