The Story

QUIET PLACE
Four-bedroom Mill House is one of a group of 20 properties which were built or converted about 20 years ago and form a small private community with shared as well as private gardens. The development is nestled in the grounds of the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club and is surrounded by well-maintained landscapes.
“We were so excited when we first saw the house – it had a beautiful two-storey window and tonnes of character, including an original mill in the corner of the kitchen,” she says. “As soon as I saw the beautiful vaulted drawing room, with its glass panel looking down on to the mill works, I knew we had to have it.”

ORIGINAL CHARACTER
Even though the house is spacious, it has been easy to maintain, says Lara.
“We have kept the décor pretty simple and neutral throughout, to show off the exposed brick and beams – and have added our personality and personal touches through our accessories, photos and pictures.”
The property is unusual, which gives it unique charm: “Our main living area is upstairs and is huge, with views on to the front courtyard gardens and over towards the distant city. When the day is over we can retire up there for the rest of the night; it is a great place to unwind or entertain. It is particularly nice to eat our dinner, looking out towards the sunset.”
Lara’s other favourite space is the entrance hall, which is flooded with light from the barn door window and the back courtyard: “This is a lovely space to relax with a cup of tea and a good book or to read with the kids,” she says.

PRETTY GARDENS
Communal courtyard gardens surround the property. This ensures the setting is tranquil and creates the air of living in a hamlet.
“Given our busy lives and the fact that neither of us have green fingers, our courtyard gardens have made things really easy for us,” she says. “There is plenty of space to chill out with a glass of wine in the sun or for the odd barbecue but it is also really low maintenance. Every year, you can refresh the garden by planting a few new pots and adding hanging baskets.”

GOOD TIMES
The neighbours have also been a big part of the enjoyment of living at Mill House and is one of the reasons the couple have stayed so long.
“It is a small community and everyone has a vested interest in keeping things looking good and working smoothly. What we love is that you can come and go just with the odd wave or hello when you want to keep yourself to yourself - but equally if you feel like a chat and a catch up or need a neighbourly favour, there are plenty of friendly faces to call on,” she says.
“Some of my favourite memories are of the summer parties we have had, when everyone pulls together to set up a mini marquee and barbecue in the courtyard area. We have had fairy lights, bunting, music and plenty of wine - and even an arranged visit from an ice cream van! They have been good times.”

ON COURSE
In addition to the friendly community, the great attraction to life at Stragglethorpe Manor is, of course, the proximity to the 36-hole golf course, she adds.
“Even though we are not keen golfers ourselves, our friends and family are,” she says. “The children have also loved being able to visit the driving range and we can all enjoy the benefits of the club house and a good Sunday roast within just a few minutes’ walk!”

Setting The Scene

Mill House is accessed via a courtyard, which has electric gates. There is a gravelled driveway leading down to the front courtyard garden. Block-paved and with a variety of plants and shrubs in the raised brick borders, this enjoys a northerly aspect for the evening sun
The rear courtyard garden is south-facing and has also been block-paved. Here there is a variety of plants and shrubs, as well as wall baskets, outside lighting. There is a carport area, and off-road parking, which in turn gives access to the integral garage.

Whats Nearby

There are a variety of schools including Nottingham High Schools for Boys and Girls, West Bridgford Secondary, Trent College and The Elms Preparatory and Hollygirt, to name but a few. Nottingham city is only a short drive and offers a comprehensive range of school, shopping and recreational facilities along with a main line station to London King Cross and St Pancras. The A46, A52 and M1 are all major link roads nearby and East Midlands Airport is some 25 minutes drive away.

DIRECTIONS:

Leaving West Bridgford proceed in an easterly direction along the A52 towards Bingham. Take the first exit on the roundabout onto the dual carriageway and at the first set of traffic lights turn right and then take the first right, towards Cotgrave, after approximately 300 metres turn right into Nottingham Golf Course, take the right fork and the property is within the courtyard on the left.
