THE STORY

Walking back up their manicured lawn towards the ornate terrazzo of their magnificent country home, the owners of Orchards might well imagine themselves on the Italian Riviera.
In the heart of beautiful countryside, close to the village of Great Totham, they have built themselves a modern masterpiece, a spectacular Italian-style villa, complete with palatial entertaining spaces, seven en suite bedrooms, leisure and games areas and two completely separate, self-contained living spaces suitable for guests, relatives or even staff.
"We love the style and splendour of Italian villas and have built similar homes before but never anything on this scale," one of them explains. "We like the space it offers and its similarities to the British Georgian style - but most of all we love its beautiful appearance. Everything about this house is Italian, from the wonderful gardens right through to the architecture and the furnishings inside."

BIG BLUE SKIES

It was nearly 10 years ago that the couple were considering a move and made the decision to create their palace of dreams within the tranquil Essex countryside.
"I saw a property advertised and was drawn to its lovely setting and the great big blue sky behind it," she recalls. "We came to look at it and it was such an incredible spot, with views out across the picturesque countryside as far as the eye could see. It was accessible to the city yet it felt far away from everywhere else and with two and a half acres we knew we could create whatever we wanted to here. It was idyllic and it was perfect."

DREAM HOME

The original property was taken down and the couple began to create the house of their dreams. By carrying out a new build they were able to include every last detail to ensure it met their exact needs and with their extensive experience and keen eye for design they were able to ensure it was given the luxurious finish it deserved.
"We wanted it to be light and airy, with lots of space throughout; it had to be suitable for both family living and entertaining - and everything needed to be bespoke. It all came together as we had hoped and we are so proud of it," she adds. "We both agree it is one of the most beautiful houses we have ever seen."

LAVISH ENTERTAINING

Indeed, entertaining at Orchards is a sublime experience. On the top floor of the house is an opulent party room, complete with its own bar and kitchen.
The magnificent reception hall, with its gallery above, is the perfect place to welcome guests who have entered via the imposing portico at the front of the house. A series of splendid reception rooms, all with ornate detailing, elegant furniture and shimmering chandeliers make additional entertaining spaces, and some open up on to the terrace, where summer lunches and cocktails can be taken.
"As soon as people step into the house they are surprised," she says. "Guests often can't believe the amount of space there is here, as well as the genuine Italian finish."

COMFORTABLE LIVING

From the seven beautiful bedrooms, with their luxurious en suite bathrooms and dressing areas, to the ornate handmade kitchen, there are so many spaces to admire and enjoy.
"I love the main drawing room and the kitchen," she admits. "But as soon as the men come in they go into the library or up to the room at the top to have a few drinks and watch the football."
With everything completed to the highest level, the house is now ready to be enjoyed by its next owners.
"Although it is impressive (there is about 500m of granite in this house) it is also very welcoming and comfortable, and it flows nicely," she points. "There is automated underfloor heating, which comes on when the temperature falls; this is powered by a ground source heat pump and despite the size of the house it is incredibly economical to run as well."

SUMMER DAYS

In the summer, the Orchards really comes into its own when the glorious gardens can also be enjoyed. When the weather is warm everyone like to sit out outside, admiring the immaculate lawns and surrounding countryside or gathered round the heated swimming pool, which is set within its own attractive wall.
"People can relax on the terrace or play tennis," she says. "When it is sunny here it is lovely - it is just like being in Italy."
And she adds: "I don't usually look back when we move on from one house to the next but I do think this place is different. I know I will miss Orchards - it has been a truly wonderful place to live."

SETTING THE SCENE

Orchards sits in approximately two and a half acres of land. As well as the impressive main house it also includes a detached one-bedroom bungalow and a detached two-storey, one-bedroom pool house, both of which provide additional accommodation.
The magnificent parkland-style gardens bring extra elegance to the house and blend beautifully with their countryside surroundings. There is also a detached triple garage, heated outside pool and tennis court.
