Around 1507 the register of Deer Abbey lists its land in the 'New Paroche of Deir'. There are 3 churches in the village although only one of which (St Kanes) still functions as a religious establishment. New Deer (St. Kanes) Primary School sits behind the main church in the centre of the village, the public hall being opposite.
There has been a bank in the village since at least 1847 and the Culsh monument is located nearby. The New Deer show is an agricultural show that has been running for over 150 years.

Turriff is some 7 miles westwards and has a larger selection of shopping and supermarkets in addition to agricultural suppliers and the Woodhead Brothers abattoir. It also has an 18 hole Golf Course and is home to Turriff United FC who play in the Highland League.

Aberdeen is 32 miles distant, and has a wide range of shopping, entertainment and cultural attractions which one would expect from the oil capital of Europe.
