The land is generally level or gently sloping, but does slope more steeply in places. The Soil Survey of England and Wales identifies the soil type as being principally of the Escrick 1 Series which is described as a deep well-drained reddish course loamy soil suitable for cereals, potatoes, sugar beet and grassland. The remainder is of the Conway Series.
