Description

Glandovan is a handsome and historic 16th century Pembrokeshire country house thought to date c.1560-1580 when it was built/rebuilt by Robert Vaughan. (His grandfather was Gruffydd Vychan, Officer of the Bodyguard of Henry VII. In 1509 he was appointed Steward of the Lordship of Cilgerran and Constable of Cilgerran Castle. Robert's father was William Vaughan who was Sherriff of Cardiganshire). Robert was succeeded by his son William and grandson Rhys, who owned it in 1670 when it was assessed as having six hearths, possibly already the present house which has six chimney shafts. Over the years the property passed onto to a number of notable families including the Stedman family of Strata Florida and the Gower family of Boughton St John, Worcestershire including Abel Gower and his son Admiral Sir Erasmus Gower, Governor of Newfoundland.

The main house is accompanied by beautiful landscaped grounds and gardens, original cobbled courtyard with impressive attractive coach houses and stables. To the rear of the main house is a charming detached cottage. The property sits in around 24 acres in all (stms - subject to measured survey) with the gardens, pasture paddocks and woodland.

Accommodation
Main House Ground Floor
The interior of the main house is believed to be of a Renaissance square plan, possibly the earliest surviving in the old county of Dyfed. An elegant portico entrance leads through to the main wood panelled reception hall with doors leading off to the main reception rooms and a cloakroom at the far end. On the left is the drawing room with fireplace and double aspect views across the gardens. On the right is the dining room again with fireplace and enjoying double aspect views. A connecting door leads through to the kitchen. Further along the hall on the left is the sitting room with fireplace and views to the side. The large kitchen breakfast room features attractive fitted units, Aga and tiled floor. A door leads off to the side garden and to a large utility room at the rear of the house with flagstone floor, ceiling hooks, larder and storeroom. Steps lead off the reception hall by the sitting room to an extensive cellar with wine cellar and workshop.

First Floor
An impressive staircase rises up from the end of the reception hall to the first floor accommodation. On this floor are 5 generous bedrooms (2 en suite). Two bedrooms overlook the front while two further bedrooms are situated in the middle part of the house overlooking the side gardens. The final bedroom is located at the rear of the house. The floor is completed by two bathrooms that serve the bedrooms.

Second Floor
The staircase continues to the second floor accommodation that has excellent potential for adding further bedrooms if required. At present the current owners use one of the rooms as a bedroom while the remaining rooms are used as a study, games room and storage rooms.

Detached 3 bed cottage
To the rear of the main house is a charming detached 3 bedroom cottage overlooking the valley that the current owners use as extra accommodation space for friends and family. On the ground floor is a kitchen breakfast room, dining room and sitting room with fireplace. On the first floor are 3 bedrooms that share the use of a bathroom. EPC Rating cottage = F.

Externally
The property is approached through 4 impressive stone gatepiers with gates and railings adjacent to Glandovan Lodge (the Lodge is in 3rd party ownership). The scenic drive then runs down to the house passing the original stable courtyard through gatepiers to the gravelled forecourt in front of the house.
The property extends in all to about 24 acres (stms) and includes the private driveway, beautiful landscaped grounds and gardens, walled garden, patio areas, fruit cages, productive vegetable garden, orchard, fernery housing a variety of ferns, potting sheds, hard tennis court, useful pasture paddocks and delightful woodland with various walks and waterways.

Courtyard
The original gated courtyard to the side of the main house features an attractive central courtyard flanked by two substantial stable and coach/cart houses. Both with stables and store rooms with one also including the coach/cart houses. Stone steps lead up to useful loft floors over. One of the ranges also features a bell tower and dove openings.
