A History of The Old Shop Elim
’The Old Shop Elim’’ was once the proprietors dwelling of the village post office, shop, smokery and forge/smithy, now ‘’Old Forge Cottage’’.
Built circa 1827, this house was a prominent property of the day situated in the heart of the village and in a great position to serve the local community. The shop offered a plethora of goods and services such as food, boots, clothes, general supplies, iron monger, farrier, haberdashery and post office.
It has been told that on a visit by a 95 year old relative of the shop keeper from years ago that the shop sold sweets on a Sunday which was rather taboo and unique. It was apparently the only shop to open on a Sunday on Anglesey!. The children from the surrounding villages and as far away as Holyhead would walk, bike or travel by horse to the Old Elim Shop to acquire their weekly fix of sweets.
The house has in recent years been rendered but under the render is the original stone structure which was a standard building feature of the day.
One can still see the original Smithy/Forge building at the rear of ‘Old Forge Cottage’. The Smithy still has the original smoker fire place, saddle rack and tool racks.
The house was served by fresh water well located 100 yards from the property. If you look on the driveway to the property you will see steps cut into the side of the hedging, these steps where originally installed all those years ago to serve as a route to the well across open fields. Indeed the name of the village was originally tri ffynhonnau or village of three wells which served the whole village. The village name change came about when ‘The Elim Church’ had a large influence on the village approximately 150 years ago and tri ffynhonnau became known as Elim.
In an age of environmentally friendly power solutions, it is refreshing to know that all those years ago the people of the day had the same idea of using the natural elements for power. located not far from the house is Llynnon windmill.
