Formal Gardens, Copse and Wild Garden
Heybote is approached via a timber five bar gate and a driveway flanked with grass verges, mature shrubs and mature trees. A copse provides privacy from the road to the front and the formal landscaped gardens surround the house on two sides. The gardens to the side are principally laid to lawn with herbaceous borders, mature trees and shrubs. A hedge archway leads to a further lawned garden beyond. A paved terrace leads round to the rear which opens to a seating area surrounded by stone pillars and with panoramic views over open countryside. From here, steps lead down to a lawned garden with flower and shrub borders. Within this garden, there is a raised vegetable garden and a gate to the paddock. A wild garden is adjacent to the rear garden with mature trees and a five bar gate to the paddock. The gardens and copse measure approximately 2.9 acres in total and are surrounded by fencing and mature hedging.
The paddocks are divided into two lots. The paddock behind the rear garden includes a tennis court and measures approximately 2.4 acres. The paddock adjacent to the gardens is known as Shed Farm and is accessed via the Ellesborough Road. This paddock measures approximately 1.5 acres and also includes a 570 sq. ft. brick base barn. Both paddocks are surrounded by fencing and mature hedging.
Butlers Cross is a small hamlet situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty at the foot of the Chiltern Hills in South Buckinghamshire. It lies within the parish of Ellesborough, on the crossroads between the road from Ellesborough to Little Kimble, and the road from Terrick to Chequers. The name Butlers Cross refers to the crossroads junction in the two roads being the place where the staff and servants that served the house of Chequers normally lived. From Butlers Cross, footpaths and bridleways wind their way through the Chequers Estate and woodland to Coombe Hill which has a viewpoint over Buckinghamshires countryside. The village has a public house The Russell Arms which is owned by some of the residents of the hamlet, a livery yard, a village hall, a childrens playground and Ellesborough Golf Club.
History and Heritage
Heybote was built in approximately 1938 for the niece of Neville Chamberlain who was the British Prime Minister from 1937 until 1940. The servants quarters of the house with the original bells are still apparent today. It is said that Chamberlains niece used to attend many lunches with her uncle at Chequers, the Prime Ministers country retreat. She used a footpath that led from Heybote through Chequers Estate land, right up to the back door of Chequers itself.
