Pynchon Hall The original house is late 16th century and is a substantial oak timber framed building with exposed beams and open fireplaces. The house has pargetted elevations graced by the double-hipped peg tiled roof and has enjoys a south westerly aspect at the back. The house was refurbished and sympathetically extended in the 1930s by architect Bertram Carter, a pupil of Sir Edward Lutyens, to provide generously proportioned rooms with large windows and views over the well-established grounds. There are five large bedrooms on the first floor and two further bedrooms on the second floor, one of which is interconnecting and runs the length of the house. There is also a large boarded and wood-lined walk-in loft space which could provide further accommodation.
Pynchon Hall is pleasantly situated overlooking Wrights Green, which is a Conservation Area owned by the National Trust. There are two driveways to the house; one leads to a courtyard where there are a number of period barns and a generous brick paved parking area. The second provides further parking. A sandstone terrace with brick retaining walls overlooks the grounds, which are a feature and include an attractive outbuilding which provides a garden store and houses the oil tank. Beyond there is a terrace, shrub borders, a further garden shed and a parcel of land, screened from the house, which might make a good area for a tennis court. The grounds extend to approximately 1.3 of an acre.
Directions From Bishop’s Stortford proceed in a south easterly direction along the A1060 which take you through Little Hallingbury, pass The George Public house on the left hand side and after about 600 metres, pass a right hand turn to Gaston Green, take a left hand turn past the village school and church and enter Wrights Green. The house will be found about half a mile beyond the ‘S’ bend, on the right.
