6 bedroom semi-detached house for sale

Keere Street, Lewes

Offers in Region of £1,300,000

Property Description

Full description

Tenure: Freehold

Situated on this delightful period cobbled street off Lewes High Street, where it is said that the Prince Regent rode his carriage as a wager to the bottom where the Grange Gardens and the Manor House are located. Just five minutes` walk to Lewes Railway Station (London Victoria approx 1 hour & London Bridge). Keere Street is in the highly popular Southover ‘old town` area where it, and the High Street, has a stunning mix of period property and historical attractions. Lewes town centre has individual shops and a range of public houses, antique emporiums, cafes and restaurants.

A magnificent end of terrace, double-fronted house on three storeys. The property was originally an old town inn and still has many original features. There are three large reception rooms as well as a good size kitchen with downstairs cloakroom and good cellarage. The bedroom accommodation is extremely spacious with six rooms and two bathrooms and has excellent views to the south and west. The garden is a particular feature on two levels, with superb established flower and shrubs and arbors and a top private terrace with superb flint and brick walls with glorious views to the South Downs, Southover and the Newhaven Valley.

The property has a significant history, namely: There is a plaque by the front door claiming that the property was a Beadles House of St. Michael (c. 1690) relating to the former alms-houses adjacent. Further above the door there is a Sun Insurance Fire Plaque meaning that the house was insured with Sun by Thomas Boore in 1790 for an annual premium of 7s 6d. The property was formerly the Britannia Inn from the 19th Century, which was closed down by the licensing authorities in the 1920s and subsequently bought by a certain Mr Alfred Wycherley! The deeds now contain a covenant to the effect that the property may no longer be used as a beer house for the sale of intoxicating liquors. The property was later owned by the Marshall of the Royal Air Force, Sir John Maitland Salmond G.C.B., C.M.G., C.V.O.,D.S.O. and Bar. He founded the Royal Flying Air Corps and went on to lead the RAF and be Chief of the Air Staff. In the 1920s he was commander of all British Military Forces in Iraq.
