There is believed to have been a manor house on the site as far back as 747, when it was first referred to by its Saxon name meaning "high clearing." The country home's first recorded owner was the one "Azor the Saxon," said to have been a guard of Edward the Confessor. Over the following centuries the property was then owned by a number of notable people, among others Edward II and Edward III, who kept it as a royal deer park.
