The Story

ELEGANT STYLING
Built to a very high specification, Ty Cylla exudes an elegance right from the moment visitors come up the private lane and then on to sweeping, gravel drive in front of the house.
The feeling of grandeur is heightened over the threshold in the entrance hall, where the floor has Mandarin Crema Marfil tiling and a split staircase leading up to a galleried first floor.
“There were a couple of things I especially wanted; one was a grand entrance hall and the other a large kitchen,” says Karen.
The house was completed in 2007 and is home to Karen and her partner, Nicholas Morgan.
“It’s a large house, but the rooms are not oversized, which ensures a homely feel,” she observes. “The kitchen is my favourite room, simply because it is so beautiful. It is oak with granite work surfaces, and has a Belfast sink and integral appliances.”

COSY CHATS
Double doors from the hall lead into the double aspect drawing room where French windows open out to the terrace. A working fireplace, with mahogany wood surround and marble inset, makes the room perfectly cosy for entertaining guests, especially on winter’s night.
“We do tend to use the drawing room of an evening and the dining room when we have friends or family over for dinner,” says Karen. “But most of the time we are in the kitchen, sun and games rooms at the back of the house because they have hard floors more suitable for our dogs.”
Initially, the rooms were finished with cream walls and white ceilings, but over the years, each has been given its own personality through re-decoration and styling.
“There are lots of lovely places in the house to sit. In the hall, there are two red velvet seats where I quite often sit with friends to enjoy a chat over a coffee.”

ROOM WITH A VIEW
Upstairs, the master bedroom suite features a large seating area situated in front of a bay window, overlooking the garden. There is also a separate guest suite, family bathroom and a further three bedrooms.
“It is lovely to have a morning cup of tea in front of the bay window looking out at the garden and the stream beyond, and watching the horses in the paddock,” says Karen.
All the luxurious bathrooms have high quality Sanitan fixtures and fittings, and the family bathroom includes a beautiful cast iron, roll-top bath.

DECKED OUT
Ty Cylla lends itself completely to entertaining family and friends. The couple have hosted many fun events including dinner parties and barbecues, and celebrated one or two milestone birthdays.
“For my 50th birthday, we had a marquee, hog roast, 10-piece band and about 100 guests here in the garden,” she remembers.
At the end of the stable block, there is an outdoor sitting area, with decking and lighting in the trees.
“In the summer, we spend most of our evenings out there, listening to music. It is very private,” she adds.

FOREVER HOME
The house is well situated for all the amenities in Ystrad Mynach, including shops, restaurants and pubs.
“There are two railways stations within easy walking distance of the house and it is only about 15 miles to Cardiff from here. We also have the new sports academy where many footballers and rugby players come to train. In my view, it is the best village in the valley,” she admits. “Originally, we planned on Ty Cylla being our forever home and we will miss it when we leave.”

Setting The Scene

Ty Cylla has a commanding position in the centre of its plot where the gardens have been beautifully landscaped by the owners, who themselves are both keen gardeners.
The lawns at the front and side of the property feature shrubs and planting while a weeping willow tree stands guard over the stream.
The grounds are studded with a number of mature trees including a sycamore by the stables constructed five years ago for the owner’s horses.
The block comprises two stables and a tack room, and close by there are kennels and a dog run, as well as a substantial paddock with its own gate giving access to the bridleways and cycle paths of local, outdoor attraction, the Parc Penallta.
