The Story

FAMILY LIVING
The owner and her husband extended the house further themselves after they were married in 1977.
“There were six of us living here at that time and so we needed more space,” she recalls. “We extended out over a flat roof to give ourselves a total of six bedrooms if we needed them. This is a very flexible home, which can offer between four and six bedrooms, depending on how you wish to use the different rooms.”
She adds: “One bedroom, for example, has been used as an office for years and another was used by my husband, who was a radio ham, for all his equipment.”

GREAT VERSATILITY
Today the ground floor of the house features a large drawing room, which has an open fire, the kitchen breakfast room, dining room, utility room and conservatory. Upstairs, there are two bathrooms, as well as the six bedrooms.
“The layout of this house also makes it very versatile,” she continues. “Because it is linear, there could be the option of creating an annexe at one end of the house. There are two staircases here and one of these leads up to where we have two bedrooms and a shower room, with the dining room and conservatory below. This could be ideal for fairly active older parents or teenagers perhaps.”

HOME AND GARDEN
The arrangement of rooms was ideal whenever children or grandchildren came to stay – they could have their own end of the house, where they could play music or watch films without disturbing the adults.
“This house works very well as a family home,” she says. “Children love it because it has two staircases and there are all sorts of nooks and crannies to hide in.”
She adds: “Everyone has enjoyed spending time here at different times in the past – we have six grandchildren and they have always come back here and treated Bridge Cottage as their home.”

BRIGHT SUNSHINE
With a dining room and kitchen breakfast room there is space for everyone to sit down to meals together – and the large garden is magnificent for family gatherings and parties.
“There is so much room for people to spread out into and enjoy – if you can ever get them out of the kitchen!” she jokes.
Her own favourite place is the kitchen, where she enjoys its dual aspect and sunny interior: “I also like the bedroom above the kitchen, which is lovely and warm too, and has the same double aspect.”

NEXT CHAPTER
Bridge Cottage is ready to move into but could also be taken on to the next stage by its new owners. In addition to possibly creating an annexe or remodelling the accommodation to suit their own needs they may well wish to put their own stamp on it with new décor.
“This is a quirky and very individual house but people who visit always say it is lovely,” she says. “It has such a lot of character and is set in a beautiful village, where you can cycle, walk by the river or go to the pub, which has a reputation for its good food. I do like to think of another family coming in now and enjoying it as much as we have done. The house has so much potential and the large garden is beautiful – I have enjoyed working on it for the past 30 years. This has been a happy home and it is now ready to begin the next chapter of its long history with its new owners.”

Setting The Scene

The mature garden at Bridge Cottage is one of its most appealing features. The charming house is set within approximately 1.3 acres of land including a small paddock.
The rear garden is flat, with an array of shrubs, trees, flower beds and a vegetable garden. There is a good size workshop in the garden. An entrance at the end of the garden gives ample parking with a pathway leading to the cottage. Opposite the garden on the other side of the road is a small brook, with a small portion of land belonging to the cottage.
