Property History - The house belonged to, and takes its name from, William Berington, Sheriff of Shrewsbury between 1355 and 1405. While the exact age of the house is uncertain, Berrington House was occupied by William's descendant, Roger Berington throughout the reigns of Mary, Elizabeth and James. The family were staunch Catholics, and to provide for the safety of the priest, an underground passage was built across Dogpole to the river; the passage remains to this day. Roger's initials, and those of his wife, are carved into the engraved oak panels to the sitting room.
