The Story

HISTORIC CHARACTER
Charlotte and David moved in during August 2014 with the aim of creating a home, which was conducive to family life, while ensuring it retained its historic character. Since then they have made a number of changes to the property both internally and externally.
“Old houses like this are often quite dark so our aim was to lift and brighten everything,” says
Charlotte. “It was incredibly important to us to ensure the work was in keeping with the age of the property, but we also wanted to make a really nice home for family living.”

FORMER GLORY
They have completely re-wired and re-plastered the house, sand-blasted all the original beams and removed fake beaming in the drawing room. A new dormer window was installed in the guest bedroom and new carpets were laid upstairs, while downstairs, engineered wood flooring was added.
“We also replaced a 1970s’ brick fireplace in the drawing room with a brand new one,” she says.
The couple are also in the process of seeking planning permission to enlarge the kitchen.
“The house has been extended over the years, so the historic part is basically just one room down and one up, which has made it easier for us to make changes,” explains Charlotte.

EASY LIVING
The owners enjoy spending time in the large L-shaped, drawing room which has been zoned to provide a study area with desk and then around the corner is set with arm chairs and a television.
“We even have plenty of space in there for our dining table,” she says.
From the drawing room there is a conservatory opening out to the garden, which has been turned into a playroom for the couple’s young son.
“He has all his toys and a small television in there, which works really well for us.”

TOWN AND COUNTRY
New fencing has been placed around the tree-lined perimeter of the property, making the garden secluded and private, allowing the family to enjoy quality, family time.
“The garden has been a real joy for us as it is so private and is a lovely space for eating outside in the summer. I love being out there; we often have barbecues. I think it is one of the things that makes this house really special as it’s like having your own little bit of countryside in the middle of Bracknell.”
At the bottom of the garden there is a large outbuilding connected to mains electricity, which the couple were planning to turn into a home office.

PRETTY HOME
The train station is a 20-minute walk from the house and it takes just over an hour to reach London Waterloo Station.
“We are right on the edge of Bracknell, but if you turn left outside our house we are just a few minutes’ walk away from pretty, leafy Warfield,” she says.
The location is also convenient for Ascot which is about 15 minutes’ drive away and the family are regular visitors to Windsor Great Park, and The Lookout, another nearby big park with an activity centre.
“There is plenty to do and see around here, particularly for families,” says Charlotte. “We absolutely love the house. I will really miss its charm. It is just such a pretty, country, British house and I defy anyone to pull up in the drive and not smile at the sight of it.”

Setting The Scene

Cottrells is situated on a leafy, no-through road and is accessed by a gravel driveway where the owners have installed a new, raised parking area. They utilised the parking space formerly occupied by a derelict shed and surrounded it with sleepers.
To the left of the property there are steps down leading to the garden gate, where the owners have worked to clear the exceptionally large garden and expose a lawn area.
Outside the conservatory is a terraced area where the family enjoy al fresco dining.
