The Story

PLENTY OF SPACE
The vast upper floor also comprises two further bedrooms and another bathroom – yet when Robert and Sandra bought the house five and a half years ago, the upper floor didn’t even exist. “We could see how much potential the house had, and we loved the garden and woods,” says Robert. “We made the decision to buy it almost right away and then set about improving it.” Those improvements included creating a separate bungalow in the grounds and also refurbishing the nearby annexe to offer three bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Since then, the annexe has been home to their daughter and, more recently, as bed and breakfast accommodation – but the possibilities are endless. “It would make a great gym, office or playroom,” says Robert.

GLORIOUS RELAXATION
Another favourite place to unwind is outside in the hot tub with a glass of wine. “Sandra likes to unwind there looking out at the view,” he says. “For me, one of the best ways to relax is walking into the woods, maybe with our two dogs, or strolling around the adjacent golf course.” In the winter, the stylish ground floor with its two wood-burning stoves really comes into its own: this is a perfect house in which to lounge by the fire. Robert and Sandra also love the large, open plan kitchen and living area, where they are able to sit up to 25 guests at two dinner tables. Decorated in calming neutral tones, it is a fresh, light space that’s perfect for entertaining. “There’s plenty of space for people to move around, and to sit down and have food. We’ve done a lot of entertaining in our time here.”

HAPPY GATHERINGS
Their entertaining has even extended to holding parties for bed and breakfast guests; one lady’s 50th wedding anniversary particularly sticks in their mind. “Sandra did the food and I provided the music – it went really well. This is a great party house with a fantastic ambience and atmosphere.” Another bonus is that the house is not overlooked – so on days when you want to enjoy peace and quiet, you are free from traffic noise and other distractions. “One of the best things about the house is how tranquil it is – you get absolute peace here,” says Robert. “It’s lovely to sit looking out at the trees and wildlife, and it’s beautiful at every time of year: in the winter when snow falls it’s a winter wonderland, and in the summer we get bluebells in the woods.”

FAMILY TIME
One of Robert and Sandra’s great pleasures at The Firs has been enjoying family time – their three grown up children have been able to visit whenever they wish, and their son has spent time living in their bungalow. “It’s a great family house with lots of room for grandchildren to play both indoors and out. There’s so much space to run and explore.”
Sandra is a professional cook and has ensured that the kitchen is perfectly kitted out for cooking for large gatherings, with a large range cooker, smart blue splashbacks and plenty of space to move around. The attention to detail extends to the adjoining living area, which has a feature wall of beautiful nature-inspired wallpaper. “It looks like a mural; we found it at the Grand Designs exhibition” says Robert.

A HIDDEN GEM
Bringing The Firs up to date and making it fulfil its potential has been an engrossing and satisfying task for Robert and Sandra, but now they are looking for a new project. “We’ve loved turning it from one storey into what it is now, and we’ll definitely miss it,” says Robert. “I think it will make its new owners very happy: it has a lot of flexibility so you can do whatever you want to do with all the space. It’s a tranquil house in a great location, with lots of amenities nearby, from a butcher to pubs, and it’s a wonderful home to return to at the end of the day. It really is a hidden gem.”

Setting The Scene

With The Firs being set back 80 meters from the main road; it comes with extensive, tranquil grounds that are not overlooked. The beautiful lawns are bordered by mature hedges and shrubs, and allow plenty of space for games of football with the children. The pretty pond comes alive with flowers in the summer, and is a fun place for youngsters to spot frogs. The woods – bluebell-strewn in summer – are ideal for exploring, and if you sit quietly in the garden or at a window you will spot everything from squirrels and birds to foxes.
At the front of the property there is a very large parking area, with room for around 15 cars – so big gatherings are never a problem.
“It’s a peaceful spot that our guests always enjoy enormously,” says Robert.

Berkhamsted has its own symphony orchestra as well as frequent jazz, choral, operatic, flamenco folk and Irish events. There are also local bands performing a varied mix of modern music. With the quiet leafy lanes and pretty Hertfordshire towns and villages all around you, it is hard to believe that Bovingdon is also within easy reach of the M1, M25 and M40.
