The Story

Having the luxury of space to work on his model ships or dining with friends out in the gazebo, the owner of Glenderry relishes the size and flexibility of his Windsor home.
He and his wife moved into the property some eight years ago now and have truly made it their own. "We both knew Windsor well and thought the location of the house was excellent," he recalls. "It was a good basic house and we could see that if we were able to do what we wanted to it it could become a superb home." Set on one of the oldest roads in Windsor, just two blocks from the castle, it was one of three homes built in the 1930s at the same time. "It had been modernised in the 1980s to double the width at ground floor level and incorporate the garage," he explains. "Four years ago we stripped that all away and then doubled the width of the house ourselves but did so across three storeys."

SPACIOUS HOME
Today Glenderry offers six bedrooms, six bathrooms and substantial reception space. It also incorporates an area which could be used as a separate, self-contained annexe if required.
"To all intents and purposes we built a new home, which was completed to a very high standard," he says. "Although it still has the appearance of an older house it is very modern inside." The property was designed to incorporate entertaining space, rooms for hobbies and plenty of accommodation for friends and family. "When we moved in our children were aged 18, 20 and 22 so we anticipated there had to be room for six or seven adults to be accommodated comfortably. Because all the bedrooms have bathrooms they all feel like apartments."

SEPARATE LIVING
One of the bedrooms is on the ground floor, where there is also a bathroom, study, family room and sitting room. The study has French windows on to the garden. "It would be very easy to install a kitchen in this part of the house and then it really would be self-contained. Likewise, the top floor of the house is one large space with its own bathroom so anyone living up here would feel very separate from the rest of the house." This space would also make a great leisure area or cinema room: it has surround sound and like the rest of Glenderry it has been cabled for multi-media and business purposes. "This is also a great party room - the kids love it up there : we have lots of sofas, a television and speakers up there. It is extremely comfortable and very light."

HIGH QUALITY
Rooms in the house were decorated in a stylish, under-stated fashion, following advice from the owners' daughter, who is an interior designer. All fixtures and fittings were of a high quality: bathrooms, for example, were from Villeroy & Boch. His wife, who is passionate about collecting exotic, specimen plants, has developed the garden and ensured there is an easy flow between the home and garden. "We have two sets of French windows that can be opened up to ensure a free flow from the kitchen dining room out into the garden," he says. "We redesigned the garden so that it now has four raised beds in a cross shape, where my wife can sit and tend to her plants; she also has lots of unusual fruit trees in pots."

SPECIAL TOUCHES
The rooms on the ground floor that could become annexe accommodation have allowed the owner to pursue his own hobbies. "I like to build model ships and have model railways and am lucky that with this house I have the luxury of being able to spread myself out into a couple of rooms," he says. The house is beautifully finished but has been designed so new owners can easily bring in their own fixtures and fittings to make it their own: "We have added a few special touches, such as the four foot wide oak front door, with an inset stained glass window in an Arts & Crafts style - we also added a Georgian post box out in the front. When our postman saw it he brought us one of those metal plates to put on it!"

Setting The Scene

Glenderry is set back from the road, with a large front driveway, where there is plenty of space for a number of vehicles to park.
The rear garden is laid with fossil slabs and raised flower beds. There is a tiled gazebo with lighting and power sockets, as well as a built-in barbecue. The garden has been laid out with entertaining in mind.
