The Story

IDYLLIC SETTING
It was both the tranquil setting of the property and its abundance of character that first attracted the couple to Pinfold Lane. The semi-detached house is more that 200 years old and would once have been farm workers’ cottages for the farm house next door.
“I remember it was described as an idyllic country cottage,” she recalls. “The village was also great – in a rural location yet with easy access to Nottingham, and to Worksop and Leicester, where we were working at the time. And it had a pub, which made it even more appealing!”

SUNSHINE AND LIGHT
Previous owners had already started renovating the property and had added stables and a garage. The current owners came in and made a few finishing touches of their own, such as adding skirting boards, and also made some changes to suit their own style of living.
“We have adapted the house as we have gone along,” she says. “So, for example, we have knocked through and opened up the back of the house, where the kitchen is, to make it much sunnier and have a nice view over the back terrace.”

CHARACTER HOME
Work was also carried out to extend the property out to the side. An old lean-to was removed and the house was built out at both ground and first floor levels.
“This gave us a new sitting room and bedrooms above,” she explains. “We used reclaimed materials from an old farmyard at the back, ensuring the bricks and pantiles tied in well.”
Just a couple of years ago, a new kitchen was installed; the family bathroom was also refitted: “We have kept rooms quite plain in style: some parts of the house, especially where there are beams, have a traditional feel while others are more modern. We have used some Farrow & Ball paint and have otherwise chosen colours and finishes that seem to work well or that we like.”

PEACEFUL PLACE
Today the ground floor of the house features a drawing room, garden room and dining room, as well as the kitchen, cloakroom, utility room and boot room.
“The communal parts of the house have been great for a family. We have a massive table in the dining room that we can all sit round for meals and where the children would do their homework; there is a wood-burner in there too. Because the property is L-shaped the children were able to be at one end of the house watching television while we were at the other, enjoying the peace.”
The sitting room is a particularly relaxing place to be, she points out: “You have the front garden on one side and the back on the other and so it really feels like you are surrounded by gardens and nature.”

CLOSE TO NATURE
The rural setting of the property has given the family great pleasure. Not only is their garden a relaxing place to spend time, but the surrounding area is also magnificent.
“There are lots of places to walk and this is quite a horsey village, with a few livery stables and a trail for those who like to ride,” she says. “I am a keen cyclist and it is lovely to head off to the Vale of Belvoir from here, where the routes are very varied, and my husband plays golf at Radcliffe on Trent.”
There is a good bus service into Radcliffe, where there is a wide range of other amenities too. Nearby Bingham is also a bustling market town, with plenty going on.
“We like to go to the theatre in Nottingham too and it is nice to be within such easy reach of the Peak District,” she says. “This village itself has a good community feel too, with events going on for those who want to get involved.”

Setting The Scene

The cottage is situated on a quiet private road overlooking allotments.
To the front is a lawn with flower and shrub border. There is also a patio here.
The rear garden is also lawned, with a terrace, some raised flower beds. There is a drive to a garage and a former stable.
