THE STORY

Family barbecues and fun in the garden are some of Jane and Andy's favourite memories from 10 years living at Addison Gate.
"We've got a big extended family and the house has been perfect for get togethers," says Andy. "It's also an ideal place to relax, maybe pottering in the garden or relaxing in the
sitting room with a glass of wine."
When he and Jane bought the house from new 10 years ago, its tranquillity was a big selling point: "We had been living in Brentwood, which was noisy and busy. This was completely different - it has excellent transport links to the city but when you come home from work you can enjoy how peaceful it is."

BRIGHT AND AIRY

Besides its excellent travel links and attractive village location, Andy and Jane fell for the property's bright and airy interior.
"The most important thing for us was finding a light house. When you walk in it's quite striking - all the rooms are a good size and it has some interesting features, including a large master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling. It also has a west-facing garden that is not overlooked."
Besides having the garden beautifully landscaped, they have needed to do very little to the house during their time there other than decorate it in light shades that really make the most of its light, sunny atmosphere.

ALL SEASONS

Beautiful and comfortable at any time of year, the house has French windows in the sitting room, which open up in summer to create a free flow into the garden
"It's especially good that we have lighting and some nice furniture out on the terrace. It's a lovely secluded spot to sit in."
The house also has French windows in the master bedroom, which open onto a Juliet balcony.
"It makes the room very cool in the summer. Along with the vaulted ceiling, it gives the room real character and interest."

FAMILY FUN

When Jane and Andy initially moved to the house their three children were nearly all grown up, at 18, 20 and 22. Over the years they have returned to live at home for periods of time, and they all love to come home for family gatherings.
"It's a great family home - there are enough bedrooms and bathrooms for everyone and we all fit in very nicely.
"We now also have a young granddaughter and the house is a safe, pleasant place for her to play. In the summer we put a bouncy castle out on the lawn for her.

HAPPY GATHERINGS

With three children, one grandchild and plenty of extended family, Jane and Andy have hosted plenty of celebrations at Addison Gate.
"Our eldest daughter had her engagement party here - we put a marquee on the lawn and had and plenty of room for 70 people. The house is great for parties because there is a good flow from room to room."
The house is also ideal for dinner parties, when the attractive dining room comes into its own.
"We can fit 10 people around the dining room table, which is also great for when the family all come here at Christmas."
For smaller meals, the kitchen is ideal, having a dining area and plenty of room to sit and chat while food is being cooked: "It's a very sociable room, with an island that is a perfect place to enjoy breakfast."

BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

While they are now ready to downsize and move closer to their children, Jane and Andy know that Addison Gate will be a tough act to follow.
"We will miss having the French windows to open in our bedroom during the summer, and we'll miss the garden and the tranquility. We have great neighbours and it's a lovely, friendly village. We've very much enjoyed the surrounding area for walks; there is lots of green space nearby and some good pubs.
"I think the new owners will love dining outside in summer and the fact that there is plenty of room inside. The house has the best of both worlds in that it's in a rural location but it's not isolated. When I was working in the city it was always great to come home here."

SETTING THE SCENE

During their second year at Addison Gate, Jane and Andy set about giving it a great garden. A tranquil space which is not overlooked from the rear, it has been turned into something very special.
"It's a very good size and the landscaping has created a nice mix of raised beds and a flat lawn, which is perfect for everything from croquet to putting up a marquee or bouncy castle.
The rear terrace is a real suntrap and it's great in summer when we put a couple of sun beds out."
Throw in an electric awning and you can enjoy the garden even on rainy days; Jane and Andy often enjoy dining out there in the summer months.
"It's lovely to open up the French windows in the sitting room to sit outside and watch our granddaughter play."
