The Story

HIGH QUALITY FINISH
The couple moved into their home in 1999 and since then have enhanced it with several touches of their own.
“We added a conservatory on to the back of the house and also changed the family bathroom,” she explains. “A landscape gardener redesigned the outside areas for us and put in 160 new shrubs and a lovely gazebo. It now looks fantastic but is also low maintenance.”
When it came to decorating the property itself she was able to bring in her own expertise to give it the style it deserved. Experienced in interior design, she chose high quality wallpapers from the likes of Colefax and Fowler and Nina Campbell.
“All the décor was chosen very carefully to keep the house light and welcoming,” she says. “All the fabrics in the soft furnishings and the upholstery were also designer names.”

GORGEOUS GARDEN
With a dining room, drawing room, study and large kitchen breakfast room on the ground floor, in addition to the conservatory, the house offers generous reception space. Upstairs there are four bedrooms and a family bathroom; the large master bedroom also has an en suite bathroom.
“We love being in the conservatory,” says Russell. “You feel as if you are part of the garden.”
Gaynor adds: “It wraps itself right around the house and so you have lovely green views from the conservatory in all directions.”

SPACE FOR GUESTS
The drawing room opens into the conservatory, which is superb for entertaining.
“We lived overseas for 13 years and have a lot of friends who come to stay with us from other countries and they absolutely love this house and garden: they like relaxing in the conservatory or sitting out in the garden, enjoying a gin and tonic,” she says. “There is always plenty of space for people to stay too. Our daughter, her husband and two children recently came to stay for a week and there was lots of room for everyone.”

EXCEPTIONAL LOCATION
The couple relish the tranquillity of the setting but have also enjoyed being part of the local community.
“There is a lot going on if you want to get involved,” Russell points out. “When we first came here I joined the Photography Club and we are also members of the Rendez-Vous Club.”
As National Trust members they have enjoyed visiting country houses and gardens in the area and often go into Cardiff to the theatre or to a concert.
“There are nice pubs close by, where you can eat delicious meals, as well as coffee shops and restaurants; we also like to go out into the Vale to the pretty villages and heritage coast, of course, I love Cowbridge.”
She adds: “When we came here we had carte blanche to go anywhere in Wales but I wanted to be within reach of Cowbridge – it is a wonderful place, with so many lovely shops.”

A HAPPY HOME
The Thompsons are now moving back to Reading to be closer to their children and grandchildren. It will be a wrench leaving Badgers Brook Drive but they are looking forward to spending more time with their family.
“I think we will miss the ambience of the house itself, as well as the beautiful surroundings,” says Russell. “We have been very happy here – it is a lovely, quiet place and yet we can get to everything we need so easily.”
And Gaynor adds: “We both love it here: this has been the nicest home we have ever had.”

Setting The Scene

The house on Badgers Brook Drive sits on an exceptional plot and enjoys a great position on the development. The garden wraps around the house: it is low maintenance, private, secure and enjoys a sunny aspect. There is a drive, which provides off-road parking for several vehicles leading to a detached double garage.
