In the other direction it's approximately 3 miles from Toll House to the historic town of Bampton, which is is a small town but has a surprising range of local amenities including pubs, restaurants, tea rooms, late-opening supermarket, post office, butcher, greengrocer, chemist, and a range of other shops. Bampton has quite a history from the Romans to its early Saxon origins, the Norman castle, the wool and pony trade, the 12th century church, the quarrying of the local stone; now it is a thriving centre used by locals and visitors alike. This small and vibrant town is located in mid-Devon; nearby Exmoor National Park, Wimbleball Lake and the Grand Western Canal Country Park provide wonderful opportunities walks, cycle rides and activities.
