The adjoining villages of Beadlam and Nawton lie just 2.5 miles east of the renowned Georgian market town of Helmsley where the river Rye descends from the North York Moors in a southerly direction towards the Vale of Pickering and which is rightly regarded as the true jewel in the Crown of this beautiful part of the countryside. The villages are on a bus route and are well served with amenities and have the benefit of a Church, Sports ground, Public House and Primary School and the Ryedale secondary school lies within walking distance on the southern edge of the village. Further local facilities are available in the charming Georgian town of Kirkbymoorside which lies just 3.5 miles away to the east.

Originally a modest cottage constructed of attractive stone elevations under a pantile roof, Highthorn is believed to date originally from the Georgian era and was subsequently extended in Victorian times by the addition of a substantial westerly wing adding considerably to its flexibility of use with the principal reception room now contained within this later addition. Many period features remain to include sash windows, panelled doors and exposed beams to many of the rooms. The accommodation is well laid out and of particular note is the fact that all of the principal reception rooms face south so as to take full advantage of its wonderful elevated position from where there are panoramic views over the gardens towards unspoilt countryside beyond. Attached to the eastern gable of the house is a Granary which is currently given over to garaging with a studio above. Immediately adjacent is a substantial range of traditional stone and pantile outbuildings comprising a foldyard bounded by a single storey range formerly used as a former shippon and a calf house. Completing the picture is an enclosed gravelled forecourt bounded on its northern side by a detached stone Stable range whilst adjacent to the entrance driveway is a Holding Paddock bounded by a belt of mature trees to include Cherry, Larch and Pine.

The gardens and grounds are most attractive and lie entirely to the south of the house and may be approached direct from the Drawing Room and Dining Room which both have French doors opening to a stone flagged terrace forming a most wonderful south facing summer seating and al fresco dining area. Immediately to the front of the original cottage section of the house is a small lawn bounded by the Foldyard wall to the front of which is a profusion of climbing Roses and a deep bed containing various annuals and perennials and which is bounded on its southern side by a dwarf stone wall with a further bed adjoining. To the front of the later extension, twin clipped Yew hedges flank a central grass walkway edged by well stocked borders containing Roses and miscellaneous Shrubs and terminating at an ornamental Pond and Rockery whilst adjacent is a glazed octagonal Summerhouse and the nearby southern boundary is marked by a Flowering Cherry and an Atlas Cedar. To the west is a more informal lawn interspersed with Rose beds and a clipped Holly and this boundary is delineated by a small spinney containing Yew, Holly, Elder and Laurel whilst behind a clipped Beech hedge is an informal area of the garden dominated by two specimen perimeter Ash. Adjacent to the northern boundary is a more densely planted area of Cypress, Spruce, Juniper and Hawthorn.
