The Story

COMFORT AND STYLE
There have been many changes over the years, with an enormous extension and a new master suite with a walk-in dressing room, large bedroom and sitting area to relax in and look out to the sea. “We also added a wrap-around veranda and balconies, and created a garden room next to the kitchen, where you can look up and see the stars,” Sue says.
Finishing touches and high-quality materials have been carefully selected, from oak flooring in the drawing room, snug and dining room, and underfloor heating in the kitchen, to the self-clean windows and Pilkington Blue glass throughout. Now spectacular views can be enjoyed from inside the house, with little visibility from the outside in. “We aren’t overlooked at all, but this does add to that privacy,” she says.

JUST HEAVEN
The kitchen is a superb place to relax and prepare food, with a central island and superb appliances, including the American-style fridge-freezer, halogen hob and built-in coffee maker. Yet with such a spacious layout, there are also plenty of other living areas to enjoy.
“The drawing room is wonderful for entertaining, but also just to sit and look out over the gardens and the sea,” Sue says. “And the snug is great when it’s just the two of you on a cold winter’s night. But I think my favourite room has to be my bedroom; to sit in bed, or on the balcony, at the weekend with a latte and to admire the views, is just heaven.”

LIVING THE DREAM
The indoor, heated swimming pool also has a central role in life at The Cherries.
“It’s fabulous – when I get out of bed in the morning I walk downstairs and have a swim, first thing; then take a shower in the downstairs bathroom and I’m ready to face the day,” Sue explains. “Often we entertain family and friends there – in the summer you can lie out in the sun and have a barbecue; in winter you can swim as you watch the snow falling.”
With a triple garage and large drive, there is lots of room for guests to park their cars.
And the spacious house itself suits family life. “Everybody has their own space to retreat to, as well as lots of sociable areas to enjoy each other’s company.”

STUNNING SECLUSION
The location is very quiet, peaceful and secluded, but far from isolated.
“There are some little shops and restaurants just a stroll down the road,” she describes.
The charming Victorian seaside town of Penarth is just a 10-minute drive away, and Cardiff, with its vibrant city life and rail links to London, Bristol and the rest of the country, is under a half-hour drive. There is also a variety of wonderful places to visit nearby, from Cosmeston Country Park just round the corner, to beautiful beaches from as little as two minutes away.
“We are just up the road from Penarth Marina, with its restaurants and the barrage, on which you can cross to Cardiff,” Sue says. “But when we go out and have a few drinks there in the evening, we tend to catch the water taxi back.”

REST AND RELAXATION
With five bedrooms and four bathrooms, The Cherries is a sizeable property.
“We now feel it’s too large for us,” Sue explains. “It would suit a couple who enjoy hosting guests, or a family, perfectly but we are keen to downsize now.” She looks over the home she has created, and the lifestyle it provides. “I’ll miss the views, the garden, the pool, my bedroom: I’ll miss everything here,” she says. “It’s so calm and picturesque, and wonderful to live in: you feel like you’re on holiday when you are here.”

Setting the scene

The entrance to the property is marked by large, electrical gates, which open to reveal spectacular views across the garden and house. But there are also some trees next to the gate, concealing a children’s play area, complete with trampoline and climbing frame.
“The play area is one of the different zones I’ve created in the garden,” Sue explains.
“There’s the courtyard and another seating area with raised flowerbeds, which leads to a large decked area next to the pool hall. In front of the drawing room is a slated area leading to a pebbled area and then the lawn.”
Finishing touches, such as the poured resin driveway and the granite courtyard, with terrace furniture and a water feature, which can also become a fire, complete the perfect outdoor environment.
“It’s brilliant for entertaining at night,” she adds. “We have mood lighting as well as three water features.”
