The Story

As soon as the owners saw the exquisite period cottages they were love-struck - the pretty houses were exactly what they were looking for as they settled back in the UK.
"We came to see the one next-door but missed out on it and then when we heard about this one we knew we wanted it without even looking around," one owner admits. "Initially we loved its kerb appeal and its setting - it felt like it was in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by beautiful fields, yet really it was very close to Gerrards Cross. We were coming from South Africa and this was a quintessential English country cottage - it was exactly what we were looking for."

EXCEPTIONAL KITCHEN
They loved the inside of the cottage too but knew they wished to make changes to suit their own lifestyle.
"I love cooking and being in the kitchen, and realised I wanted to do something different with it. We lived in it for a couple of years, while we got used to the house and thought about what we wanted to do. Then we extended out to one side to make the kitchen into more of a square and changed the windows to allow more light to come in."
The kitchen is now a bright space, with Fired Earth units, a vaulted ceiling and central island and breakfast bar. There is space for a table and it also opens into the formal dining room.
"I love being in there now - it is perfect for anyone who enjoys cooking," she says.

LIGHT INTERIORS
The rest of the ground floor of Sundown Cottage is also much more open-plan. The entrance hall now opens into the family room and dining room; there are double doors between the drawing room and dining room.
"The whole house has been redecorated and revamped," she continues. "It has a light, contemporary style and is painted in Farrow & Ball and Fired Earth shades."
The property is a comfortable and welcoming place to spend time. Upstairs there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, including a sumptuous en suite bathroom to the master bedroom.
"We love it all!" she adds.

BEAUTIFUL BATHROOM
There are many different quiet corners in which to relax, read or spend time with family and friends.
"I like the dining room and library area, which is very light and where there are two sets of French windows: one on to the courtyard and the other on to the garden. In the summer it is so nice to have them both open while you are in that part of the house."
The large drawing room becomes cosy in the winter, when the open fire is lit.
"We don't need it on as the house is always lovely and warm but it does add a fabulous ambience."
But she adds: "The place my husband likes to relax more than anywhere else is in the bath - we have a wonderful bathroom, with a free-standing bath, and he can spend hours in there reading!"

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
In warmer weather they are often outside, dining under the pergola or relaxing in the garden with friends and family.
"There is lots of space out there: the teenagers can be on one side of the house and we can be on the other. It is nice to have both a front and side garden."
The small community is very friendly and often hold parties together. It is also a superb location for anyone who enjoys spending time walking, cycling or horse-riding in the great outdoors.
"The dog walking here is great - you can stroll to the pub or across Bulstrode Park to Gerrards Cross. My children would always walk that way to the station before they could drive."

FRIENDLY PLACE
From Gerrards Cross Station there are fast and frequent trains into London Marylebone, which take approximately 25 minutes. It is also easy to access the M40, M25 and the A40 into London. The M4 and Heathrow airport are also within a short drive.
"We enjoy going into Beaconsfield too and it takes just 20 minutes to get to Windsor. There are lots of nice villages in the area and we frequently go to Black Park to walk the dogs," she says. "This is a lovely area to be in and the house itself is really very dear. We will miss it greatly - it has such a lovely, friendly feel."

Setting the Scene

There are lots of different areas of garden to enjoy at Sundown Cottage. Both the front and side garden are laid to lawn; there is also a sun terrace to the side of the house.
At the back of the house there is more grass and an additional terrace with a pergola. The property also has a parking space at the bottom of the garden. The owners were considering making this into a car port.
