Full description

Tenure: Freehold

A very attractive and beautifully presented traditional Devon Longhouse with five bedrooms (four with ensuite bathrooms) and three reception rooms. It also comes with a three bedroom self contained cottage, a swimming pool and is located in a wonderful rural setting.

Wigham is Grade II Listed and is believed to have been built in the mid 16th century with a 20th century extension. The house still retains many of its architectural features, in particular the joinery including a wonderful plank and muntin screen in the drawing room. Externally, the property is very attractive with colour washed elevations under a thatch roof, new in 2010.

The property lies at the end of its own long driveway, within parkland and is situated in a totally peaceful and idyllic location with wonderful views over the valley.

Its accommodation is extensive. Originally smaller, the farmhouse was enlarged into outbuildings during the 20th century to create a further wing and the cottage. The period character features throughout the house with many large beams. There are two large fireplaces in the drawing room (with bread oven) and dining room and a smaller fireplace with wood burner in the billiard room. There is a flagstone floor in the drawing room. At the heart of the home is the four oven oil fired Aga in the kitchen, as well as an extensive range of cupboards and drawers with work surface over and two double sinks. There is also a superb walk-in pantry, wine cellar and breakfast area with space for dining table. Off the kitchen is a useful study, cloakroom, rear hall and entrance.

On the first floor are four bedrooms, each with ensuite facilities, a fifth bedroom / study, laundry room and cloakroom.

Attached to the west of the house is the cottage annexe, which was converted in the mid 20th century. It also brims with character and charm. The ground floor includes a lovely sitting room with stone fireplace and triple aspect with views down the valley. There are French doors to the garden. The kitchen / dining room also benefits from an Aga. The third bedroom is located on the ground floor, with the two further bedrooms on first floor level, together with two bathrooms (one being ensuite). The cottage has previously been used for holiday lets to provide ancillary income.
Wigham benefits from superb, extensive gardens and grounds of approximately 3.75 acres with areas of lawn and flower / shrub borders. To the rear of the house is a vegetable garden, fruit cage and orchard. Within the garden is a swimming pool, sheltered by a wall, with a terrace for seating. Further land is available up to 20 acres, if required by separate negotiation.

Wigham is about a mile from the village of Morchard Bishop, which is situated within the lovely rolling countryside of Mid Devon, just to the east of the valleys of the River Yeo and Taw and about 8 miles to the north-west of Crediton. In the village, there is a primary school, post office and shop, public house and church, whilst more extensive facilities are catered for in Crediton, or further afield in the University and Cathedral city of Exeter, where there are rail connections to London, access onto the M5 motorway and Exeter International Airport. There is also access to the M5 motorway at junction 27 and Tiverton Parkway Station, via Tiverton and the North Devon Link Road.

From Exeter take the A377 to Crediton. Continue through the town and proceed along the A377 to Morchard Road. Take the right turning signposted Morchard Bishop. In the village you will pass the London Inn on your right hand side. Continue on the road down through the village (Fore Street). On leaving the village, Fore Street turns into Chumleigh Road and after ¼ mile take the right hand fork at Turning Ways (beside the red post box). After ½ mile the entrance to Wigham is on your right hand side.
