These days the two district names of Moorlands and Moorfields tend to be used interchangeably but historically they were actually quite distinct. The 'Moorlands' estate stretched from Englishcombe Lane to the Somerset and Dorset railway (now Linear Park) whereas the 'Moorfields' estate was a smaller one on the opposite side of the line.
Moorlands House still stands although now much altered from how it was. Anna Sewell (who wrote Black Beauty) lived there as a child between 1864 and 1867. Local firms such as Howells Bros of Milmead Road began building the Moorlands Estate in 1947, alongside prisoners of war who worked on the roads. In October 1947 the first block of four houses and two sets of flats in Cotswold Road were completed and handed over to the Council. At the time this estate was built, four out of ten British households had no fixed bath, well over a third had outside toilets and under half had a hot water tap.
