The Story

NESTING INSTINCT
The chalet-style home dates back to the 1960s but has been modified substantially by the couple.
“We converted the loft to give ourselves another very large double bedroom and an en suite bathroom. We also built the garage and put a games room or office above it.”
Both these rooms enjoy far-reaching views.
“The bedroom is very light and peaceful: it is a lovely place to look out from,” she says. “We can see over the fields, where we often spot all sorts of birdlife. We also see a lot in our garden; we have three nesting boxes here of our own and there are blue tits that return every year.”

BRIGHT AND SIMPLE
The room above the garage is also a generous space and could be used for all sorts of purposes, depending on the requirements of the next owners.
“I work from home about three days a week and it has been ideal for me,” he says. “I am an engineer and there is lots of light in there for me to work at my drawing board.”
The whole house has a bright, airy feel: rooms are light, with wooden floors and pale walls, giving them a slightly Scandinavian feel.
“We have kept it bright and simple,” he says.

GARDEN VIEWS
Other work to Bough Ley saw the couple add a conservatory.
“To be honest I wasn’t sure about having a conservatory but I have to admit it has become my favourite room in the whole house,” he says. “We spend all our time in there now, relaxing and enjoying the view of the garden. It is heated in the winter and in the summer we can keep the doors open or just sit outside.”
His wife adds: “We have even had Christmas dinner in there – with 21 people sitting down to eat!”

HAPPY TIMES
With a formal dining room and a drawing room, as well as a spacious kitchen breakfast room, it has been very easy to accommodate guests. There are also four more bedrooms on the ground floor and two additional shower rooms.
“There is always plenty of room for people to stay,” she says. “We have done a lot of entertaining here over the years. For our 25th anniversary we had a marquee and band in the garden, and we had my mum and dad’s 60th wedding anniversary here. And, of course, there have been lots of Christmases.”

COAST AND COUNTRY
While the couple have loved the sense of country living their home has offered them, they have also found it an easy place to raise a family.
“There is a choice of good schools here and we can get into Heathfield to go shopping,” she says. “It is also quick to reach Bexhill, Hastings or Tunbridge Wells.”
They have loved being able to indulge in long coastal walks, as well as countryside hikes, and yet having good access to station with trains into London has also been important.
“I have often commuted into London – it is only 10 minutes to the station from here and then I can be in London in just over an hour,” he points out.
With the children grown up, however, they have decided to downsize now and perhaps go travelling.
“This house needs a family,” he adds. “But we have had a wonderful time here and will certainly miss its space and its light when we leave.”

Setting The Scene

Bough Ley enjoys beautiful gardens. These include a very large expanse of lawn, where the current owners have had a marquee erected and hosted garden parties.
There are also terraced areas for sitting out in the sunshine, dining outside and holding barbecues. The property includes a double garage with twin up and over doors. There is separate access to the self-contained large office or games room over the garage.
