Ockham is a beautiful hamlet that nestles into the countryside near East Horsley and Cobham in Surrey. The hamlet lies to the east of the A3 between Cobham and Guildford with easy access to the M25 and A3 it is ideally situated for journeys to Central London, Heathrow and Gatwick. Cobham, approximately 3 miles away, has an excellent range of shops and restaurants, while more comprehensive retail and leisure facilities can be found in the county town of Guildford. There is an excellent selection of schools in the general area catering for all age groups in both the private and public sector.
Built in 1864 by William, 1st Earl of Lovelace, Lord Lieutenant of Surrey and owner of Ockham Park. The materials used for the building were the famous Ockham bricks, baked in the brickyards off Long Reach, for which the Earl had received a medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851. The Hautboy - the name is derived from the French haut-bois, the wooden instrument producing a high pitched note, now known as the Oboe. The Hautboy was involved in a notable court case in 1898 when Lady Harberton, leader of the Rational Dress Society stopped at the inn on a cycle ride wearing baggy knickerbockers and was refused service due to her unsuitable attire!
