The Story

TOP DECISION
The four-bedroom home was just a shell when Peter and Penny bought it 14 years ago. Built around 1919, the property originally had a lot of land with it, but the previous owners sold off some of the land for housing. They also stripped The Croft back to its brickwork, while carrying out renovation works such as installing new beams and a roof, and re-plastering and re-wiring. "It was a very old house with a lot of character and individual style. It allowed us to make some changes of our own to make the best use of the space," explains Penny.

BEDROOM BALCONY
Aside from the entrance hall, there is a well-equipped, bespoke kitchen dining room, a playroom, a games room, with its own cloakroom, and a study on the ground floor. Upstairs there are four spacious bedrooms. The master bedroom has been fitted out with wardrobes, and also has its own dressing area and a luxury en suite bathroom.
There is also a balcony, which is accessible from both the master bedroom and other main bedroom at the front of the house. "We recently had the balcony balustrade re-built using wrought iron to match the front of the house," says Penny. There are two further en suite bathrooms and a family bathroom. "All the rooms upstairs are large and in fact you could fit a double bedroom in the family bathroom!" she says. "Upstairs, there is a galleried hallway and everywhere is painted in neutral tones. A lot of the original fireplaces had been taken out, so we installed a wood-burner in the drawing room and marble fireplace in the dining room."

FUN AND GAMES
Peter and Penny make good use of all the space in the house, but like most people when family visit they tend to gravitate towards the kitchen. "If, however, we have more than four us to eat then we always use the dining room" says Penny. "There is a full-sized snooker table in the games room and we have had quite a few parties in there. I also have the playroom kitted out for the grandchildren with a television and sofas. They always like to play in there." However, for Penny, the drawing room is the favourite place. This is where she likes to relax. "It is very comfortable and overlooks the front garden," she says.

WEDDING MEMORIES
A special memory which will always remain for the owners was hosting the wedding of their son at The Croft. It was a truly wonderful day. "My youngest son got married here. The church is just a couple of minutes' walk from the house so we put up a marquee on the lawn. We hosted about 80 guests and hired a harpist to play for them when they came back from the church." Situated in the seaside village of Sully, the beach is just a short distance away and perfect for dog walking. "We have a local shop, Post Office and pharmacy, along with a couple of pubs," says Penny.

SPORTS GALORE
Sully has a strong community and residents benefit from a Yacht Club, Cricket, Football and Bowls Club. The coastal town of Penarth is a bus ride away and offers a variety of shops, pubs and restaurants along with rail links straight into Cardiff City Centre. "We are about equal distance from Penarth, Barry and Cardiff takes about 10 minutes in the car," she says. "We love the house, but we now feel the time is right to downsize. We have had an enjoyable time living here and it is in a lovely location. We will be very sorry to leave."

Setting The Scene

The Croft sits in substantial gardens sectioned into three main areas with a front garden that is south-facing and consequently catches the sun all day long. Central to the garden is a large and old tree, which appears in old photographs of the house dating back to the 1930s. A line of trees separate the front and side gardens, and there is another area of garden at the back of the house mainly laid to lawn and shrubs. A terrace runs from the front of the house to the back and there are number of seating areas, including a small alcove beneath the balcony housing an old wartime seat. Electric gates give access to a block paved drive where there is ample parking space.
