The Story

PANORAMIC VIEWS
It was 32 years ago that the current owners moved into the remarkable house, having been drawn to it by its size and its position. Since then, they have maximised on its breathtaking outlook by carrying out changes to draw the amazing vistas right into the house.
“The main change we have made was to carry out an extension ten years ago right along the back,” she explains. “This has given us a huge open-plan kitchen dining room, with panoramic views.”
At the same time, a bespoke kitchen was created for them by Cymru Kitchens two years ago. This includes integral appliances and granite works surfaces, as well as a Franke Belfast sink and Quooker instant boiling water tap.
“French doors that lead onto the terrace so that in the summer we can just walk straight out there,” she adds.

HIGHER THINKING
Other upgrading work has included redecoration and the refitting of the family bathroom but it is on the top floor that another stunning enhancement has been made.
“We have created a fabulous new master suite up on the top floor,” she says. “This includes a large dressing room, with a wet room with marble tiles, a cloakroom and a beautiful bedroom, with doors on to a glass balcony.”
Here they can sit in the morning, high up, enjoying a cup of tea, and looking at the valley as it rolls away before them.
“This really is a lovely room, which has something of a French style,” she adds.

SPACIOUS FEEL
On the floor below, there are three more bedrooms and a family bathroom. One room has an en suite shower room and the other takes in the lovely bay window to the front of the house.
On the ground floor, as well as the amazing kitchen, dining and family room, there is also a utility room and cloakroom, drawing room and study.
“The whole house has high ceilings and really feeling of space. It is a lovely family home and a great place to entertain.”

CELEBRATING GOOD TIMES
Indeed, there have been so many happy family occasions over the past 32 years.
“At Christmas time we always have Boxing Day here – all the family come together and we have plenty of room for everyone. We have had so many birthday celebrations here too, including 50th and 60th parties,” she says. “It is so easy to put a gazebo up on the terrace to extend the kitchen right out into the garden. We had a great party for my 50th, when my son did fireworks.”

SPECIAL PLACE
Willowdene is an excellent place to live, according to the owner. She says it is close to schools, shops and leisure facilities, and therefore perfect for a family.
“It takes just five or 10 minutes to get into Cwmbran or Newport, and only 5 minutes to reach the M4, and then you have access to Cardiff or Bristol – we often fly from Bristol Airport, which is so easy to reach.”
There are places to walk, cycle, ride horses and play golf in the area.
“We can see Celtic Manor Resort from the back of the house – when President Obama’s helicopter landed there I watched it through my binoculars!”
Moving now to be closer to family, she admits she will miss the space and the incredible situation of her much-loved family home.
“There is something incredible about being at the back of this house on a sunny day,” she admits. “It always feels as if you are on holiday.”

Setting The Scene

The back of Willowdene is simply magical. There is a lovely, south-facing garden with panoramic views out over the valley.
The grounds include tiered levels, with a number of seating areas, as well as attractive numerous shrubs and borders. There are also apple, pear fig and plum trees, and at the bottom of the garden is space for a chicken coop and vegetable plot.
The terrace next to the house is marvellous for entertaining and summer outside living.
