The Story

HIDDEN TREASURES
Dating back to around 1830, and believed to have once been a woodcutter’s cottage, Dingle Cottage has twice been enlarged by the current owners.
“We extended the ground floor to give ourselves the drawing room about two years after moving in and at the same time put in a new bathroom and a kitchen. We also took down a wall and created the dining room,” she explains. “While we were carrying out the work we discovered the original fireplace – into which we put a wood-burner – and the original old stone staircase to one side.”

FLEXIBLE LAYOUT
Another extension has been carried out more recently which has allowed for the creation of a large, versatile room which looks out over the back garden and could be used as a family, office or bedroom.
“This part of the house could become a self-contained annexe for a relative as the utility room could quite easily become a kitchen. The main room here is a good size and large enough to be arranged as a bedroom with a sitting area.”
Also located on this floor is the entrance hall and the kitchen, which has a Rangemaster cooker and space for a table and chairs. On the first floor there are three further bedrooms and a family bathroom.

BRIGHT BEDROOMS
Dingle Cottage has been maintained well over the years. It has been redecorated regularly in antique white which is in keeping with its period style yet keeps it feeling bright and fresh.
“Our intention was to retain the cosy cottage feel,” the owner explains. “The shower room in the new extension at the back is more contemporary, while the main bathroom has a beautiful, roll-top bath. Both showers have rainforest heads.”
All the bedrooms are very light with fitted cupboards; and have views either over the garden or down the valley.
“Our bedroom has two windows overlooking the valley, while the other two bedrooms each have a dual aspect.”

ALL SEASONS
The large drawing room is also a wonderful place from which to take in the views.
“We have arranged it so we have a winter end and a summer end,” she explains. “We have comfortable furniture arranged at one end around the fire where it is lovely to sit in the colder months and we have a Bergere suite near the French windows so we can look out over the garden. I think sitting there in the summer, with the doors open, has to be one of my favourite places to be. I can sit in the sunshine with a cup of coffee and some crochet enjoying the view and sunshine.”

BEAUTIFUL WILDFLOWERS
Much of life at Dingle Cottage has been about outside living. The current owners have added a vegetable and fruit garden, a greenhouse and a terrace. They grow their own herbs and keep chickens.
“We mow the meadow once a year to encourage the wildflowers and we have lots of beautiful wild orchids growing here.”
Despite being a rural idyll, Dingle Cottage enjoys easy access to Chepstow, Monmouth and motorways. There are shops and pubs in nearby villages, a village hall just up the hill in Catbrook and plenty of local activities and events to join in with.
“This is a great place to be if you like walking as there are such a lot of footpaths, and we also have some lovely little towns in the area including Raglan and Usk which in addition to having castles also have a range of individual shops,” she says. “I have enjoyed living here and will miss everything about it. We have created a welcoming, cosy home which friends and family enjoy too and say it feels like it has been here forever.”

Setting The Scene

The gardens are absolutely delightful to the front are mainly laid to lawn and have a feature pond; the drive goes over Cat Brook which runs through the garden.
To the side and rear of the garden are mature meadows, there is a greenhouse, fenced vegetable and fruit garden, good-sized paved terrace sitting area and lovely flower beds. There is an additional paved seating area behind the house and a herb garden facing the side door.
