Full description

Tenure: Freehold

Standing proudly in the lee of Edinburgh Castle and forming an integral part of the city's skyline, Ramsay Garden is perhaps Edinburgh's most impressive address. Situated at the very heart of the capital, the property is just minutes from Princes Street, the Royal Mile and Waverley Railway Station, while there are regular trams and buses from close by to the airport. There is also a private entrance to the Castle esplanade. The property is situated metres away from the renowned The Witchery restaurant.

11/1 Ramsay Garden was built by Sydney Mitchell in 1892, and is
connected to the earlier 18th century Ramsay Lodge. It was originally built to provide university halls of residence and flats for the use of the divinity faculty. Although the architect was nominally Professor Henbest Capper, it is generally accepted that the inspiration came from Patrick Geddes, sociologist and town planner, and Ramsay Garden is regarded by many as his most striking monument. From the residents' courtyard there is a buzzer entry to an internal stone stair up to an east facing terrace at second floor level leading to the entrance. The front door opens to the elegant dining hall and from where the principal reception rooms and master bedrooms are accessed.

With east, west and northerly aspects, the property benefits from plenty of light, and offers magnificent views to the Castle, over Princes Street Gardens, the north of Edinburgh and beyond to Fife, and easterly towards Calton Hill. The property has undergone a full course of refurbishment in recent years and is finished to a high specification throughout. Outside, the residents' gardens offer delightfully landscaped space with a gate to Ramsay Lane. The gardens are maintained by a gardener employed by the RG Proprietors Association and there is a responsibility to contribute to the committee account. Courtyard parking is available to residents but there is also permit parking (Zone 4) on nearby Mound Place and Johnston Terrace on application.
