The Story

From their glasshouse by the river, the owners can watch the world go by and enjoy a lifestyle which offers them a blend of stunning modern space and individual 18th century character.
The Red House is a unique combination of a Grade II Listed canal-side cottage and a starkly contrasting, glass modernist extension, designed by architect Michael Wigginton who at the time had built the largest glass UK domestic property.
"We have been here for five years now and just love the fact it is so unique," says the owner. "In addition to its unusual design, it also sits on the edge of the Grand Union Canal, where we see herons and all sorts of other birds flying past. It is like living right inside nature here."

SPECTACULAR KITCHEN
It took five years for the previous owners to gain planning permission and build their impressive, breath-taking extension, according to the owner.
The design brief for the architect was to create a glazed, two-storey structure with minimal interruption from the framing. Large sliding doors on the west elevation now provide the openings overlooking the canal, while electrically controlled venetian blinds ensure privacy.
The ground floor of the extension is a spectacular kitchen, breakfast and living room.
"This is where we spend a lot of our time - it feels like being right on the water," he says. "It is a bright spacious room, which can be arranged as you choose, and in summer we love to have the doors open on to the terrace outside, which enhances the feeling of being so close to the canal."

WORKS OF ART
The upper storey of the glass extension could have all manner of uses, depending on the requirements of the owners. With a spacious en suite bathroom it certainly lends itself well to being a magnificent bedroom but the owner suggests it could make a wonderful office too.
"It would be a lovely place to work as there are such amazing views of the canal and lakes," he says. "We have chosen to use it differently, however. My wife is an artist and has it as her studio. She also runs her art school for children up there, which they love. It is such an incredible space, with such a great view of nature, and they are so inspired by it that they produce the most wonderful art work."

FLEXIBLE SPACES
The original section of The Red House comprises a bay-fronted drawing room, with French windows, a cloakroom, and a family room on the ground floor. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a very generous family bathroom.
"This is a house with very large rooms rather than lots of rooms," he observes. "It is very flexible and is a great family home, as well as being perfect for entertaining. I think it could appeal to different people."

OUTDOOR LIFE
The ground floor of the glass extension certainly lends itself to large parties, where guests can spill out on to the terrace beside the water.
"There is also a lawn, which my son has turned into a football pitch in the past, and where we have had a play area," he says.
The owners can moor boats up in front of the house for a fee. This varies, depending on the size of the boat.
"We have kayaks instead, which we have really enjoyed: it is great being able to be on the water in seconds, paddling up to the sailing club or wherever you want to go. I also like to cycle from here - I ride my bike to station and you could even cycle all the way into London if you wanted!"

AMAZING PLACE
The Red House is well positioned for travelling into the city or cross country, he points out. There is a choice of overground and underground stations within easy reach and drivers can be on the M25 within just four minutes.
"There is so much to do in this area too, whether you enjoy going out on the water, visiting country pubs or going for walks," says the owner. "This is a very restful place to live and yet you can get to everything you need."

Setting the Scene

The striking property offers a combination of traditional gardens and stunning riverside terrace. Whether you like sunshine or shade there will be a perfect spot for you within this house.
The front garden is laid to lawn, while the rear garden comprises the paved sun terrace leading to the canal. There is also a side garden, which is largely laid to lawn, and features trees and a shrub border.
