The History - The Walled Garden is part of the original grounds of Tewin Water House. The house was built in 1689 and was the property of Squire John Fleet: the son of Sir John Fleet - a wealthy sugar merchant who became Lord Mayor of London in 1692 and was also Sheriff of London and MP for London. John Fleet married Elizabeth Malyn who would later become Lady Cathcart and thus began a fascinating period of the history of the house, which only ended upon the death of Lady Cathcart in 1789 at the ripe old age of 98. The property had already passed into the ownership of Lord Cowper 4 years previously and following the death of Lady Cathcart, he demolished the original building and replaced it with the house we see today. It sits in grounds designed by Humphry Repton who was the last great English landscape designer of the 18th century.
