The Story

A home with heart is how Cheryl Tonkin will remember her very special mid-terraced house, which has spectacular views across Cardiff Bay and has been in her family for about 53 years.
“My parents bought the house not long after they were married and so for me it is full of childhood memories of living and growing up here with my two sisters,” says Cheryl.
“I have spent most of my life living here, and it is not just bricks and mortar to me but a home with a heart – and a big one at that.”

VIEWS ACROSS THE BAY
Fabulously located in the coastal town of Penarth, close to the town centre, there is a plethora of amenities right on the doorstep. It is also possible to walk to the barrage and across to Cardiff Bay or to catch the boat bus across the water.
The spacious accommodation in the Victorian terrace is spread over three floors and every room benefits from views across the bay.
“The views are absolutely stunning,” says Cheryl. “On a good day you can look down the channel and see both the Severn bridges.”

COASTAL WALKS
All of the amenities of Cardiff Bay and the city centre can be reached within five minutes by car and in Penarth itself, which attracts many visitors, there is a fine array of coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and shops.
“You can just walk down the hill from the house and access the stony beach and walk right the way round to Penarth beach. There are lovely coastal walks nearby and we are not even that far away from places like the Brecon Beacons. There are some very beautiful places close by,” adds Cheryl.

VICTORIAN CHARM
Dating back to 1882, the house is believed to be one of the first houses built around the original Penarth dock area. It has undergone a number of changes since Cheryl’s parents bought it in the 1960s.
“My dad did the work himself and converted the attic space many years ago by putting in the dormer window. It now comprises a large bedroom, which is the full width and depth of the house,” she explains.
“We have also partitioned it off to create a small sitting room, which has fantastic views too.”
A small extension was also added to provide more space in both the kitchen and bathroom, and also it allowed for the creation of a separate cloakroom.
The master bedroom, guest bedroom and family bathroom are on the second floor while downstairs there is a large, open-plan drawing room and dining room leading to a well-equipped kitchen and utility room.

SPECIAL OCCASIONS
Recently, Cheryl began repainting the whole house using Annie Sloan chalk paints to create a shabby chic effect on the wooden doors.
“We wanted to brighten it up. I have also given the garage a new lick of white paint too,” she says.
There are so many places to choose from when it comes to relaxing at the Paget Road house.
“I like to spend my time in the drawing room, but I can even see the bay from the dining room, where we have enjoyed all our family Christmases. Most of my memories are of the good times we have shared here.”
Fun and laughter has frequently filled both the rooms inside and the terraced garden outside as the family have enjoyed hosting many gatherings over the years.
“We have held a lot of celebrations in the house including my 18th birthday party, my dad’s 50th and my parents’ ruby wedding anniversary. Just recently my daughter held a party and we had around 70 people here.”

HAPPY TIMES
The time has now come, however, to sell the house which is so close to her heart.“All my memories here are of us growing up with my mum and dad and the gatherings we have had with friends,” she says. “It’s a great community and I remember playing in the park across the road, which used to be an allotment when my dad was young.
“It will be emotional for me and a big wrench to sell the house. I have had the best years of my life living here and it has just been magical.”

Setting The Scene

The front of the mid-terrace house opens on to the pavement where there are railings and two steps down to the road.
At the rear there is a terraced garden accessed by the utility room. On the first tier, there is just space for a bench and a small round table and two chairs.
Up the steps, there is a bigger terraced area furnished with a larger table and chairs where the owners like to entertain with barbecues in the summer.
A pergola is attached to the garage creating a shady haven when the sun hits the terrace late morning and stays all day until it sets.
There is a gate giving access to the lane at the rear of the property.
