The Story

BESPOKE FEATURES
Materials were chosen for beauty and durability: “It’s a modern design, using a lot of granite and porcelain, plus hardwood and glass. We wanted to create a low maintenance property, so we chose materials that would need very little attention over the years.” Its beautiful internal features include a bespoke staircase made from stainless steel, glass and hardwood. “We used three different contractors to create it – one who specialised in steel, one who made the glass treads and another to make the hardwood treads. We wanted a modern look with a classic twist, and utilised glass to give it a more open feel.”

PICTURE PERFECT
When it came to designing the kitchen, the owners knew exactly what they wanted and had it specially imported from Italy, along with a lot of their furniture. All their effort was recognised when the house was scouted to star in a large feature for Real Homes magazine. “They came and did a Christmas shoot here. It was a very nice article – it made us feel proud to get all our hard work rubber stamped.” The Christmas theme served to emphasise how well the look of the house can be adapted to suit different moods or seasons. By keeping décor relatively neutral, the owners have created the potential to change the look very easily by tweaking décor and furniture. “We designed it with a neutral canvas in mind, so we have three main colours: ecru, black and timber. Against that backdrop, it is easy to alter the overall feel.”

HAPPY GATHERINGS
The design of the house makes it ideal for parties, when there is plenty of space for guests to make themselves at home. “The kitchen flows into the drawing room area, which works very well – cooking can be going on in the kitchen, and it doesn’t feel cut off even though it is a separate room. It’s a very warm, friendly space.” It also helps that there is plenty of parking space on the drive. “When we have parties we can fit up to 10 or 12 cars on there.”
This works well for family gatherings too – and the owners have built up lots of happy memories of family get-togethers during nearly a decade at Tiffany Barn. “We’ve got a large family and when they come over we spend a lot of time in the garden – it’s a great place for children to play.”

FAMILY TIME
The owners’ three children were just approaching their teens when they bought the house, and have loved growing up there. “It’s a very well-proportioned house with large bedrooms, so there is plenty of room for everyone. The drawing room is very much at the heart of the house, so everyone tends to congregate there. One of our favourite ways to spend time is relaxing there, maybe watching television. We designed it so the drawing room was the focal point: you have to pass through it to go anywhere in the house. It’s a large, multifunctional space – we enjoy ringing the changes by moving the furniture.”

ROOM TO WORK
Besides being a great place to unwind, Tiffany Barn has been a perfect place to work. The owner created a home office in an adjacent building, which could easily be adapted as an annexe by new owners. “I can leave the front door and walk five paces to work in the morning, which is amazing. I don’t have to sit in traffic but I have a clear divide between work and home life.” The owner knows he will struggle to find another house that suits his needs so perfectly, so is considering undertaking another conversion. “We are unlikely to find anything this special without creating it ourselves, so another project is probably on the horizon. If we move out of the village we’ll really miss it, because it’s been a lovely place to live, and we have great neighbours. We’ll take a lot of happy memories with us when we leave.”

Setting The Scene

Tiffany Barn is reached via a sweeping gravel drive, which allows parking for plenty of cars. The beautiful enclosed rear garden includes lawns, established borders, a patio and an impressive outdoor entertainment area.
“It’s effectively an outdoor kitchen with stainless steel, built-in double barbecue stations and a sink with hot and cold running water. It’s great for summer gatherings.”
The garden is easy to look after as well as lovely to look at.
“It’s the perfect garden space: we don’t have to spend hours maintaining it but it’s big enough for the kids to play – they’ve enjoyed a lot of games of badminton and table tennis out there.”
The garden backs on to a disused section of the old Grantham canal, which is a very tranquil green area.
