The Story

OLD MEETS NEW
The barn was converted in the mid 1980's cleverly combining the original stone farm building with a new extension.
“The drawing room is one of my favourite places in the house. I love to get up early in the morning, with a cup of tea, to watch the comings and goings at the bird feeders. We get all sorts of species, including woodpeckers,” he says.
“It is such a warm room. There is a wonderful bow window to one side of the fireplace and another large window to the other so it is always filled with sunlight. At the heart of the room is a brick fireplace and when the fire is on, it is so cosy in the winter and the perfect place to escape to in the evenings to relax.”

FAMILY SPACE
The shaker-style kitchen in pale cream is in keeping with the interior of the barn and is perfect for family life.
“It is very much a sociable kitchen with plenty of space for entertaining. People tend to gravitate towards the breakfast bar to sit and chat, and when our family is here, it is a great room to gather, especially at Christmas,” he says.
The kitchen leads into the fabulous split level dining room.
“This is a lovely, welcoming room for special occasions. My favourite memories are of us all in the dining room: our four children and eight grandchildren, chatting and laughing together round the table.”

STUNNING VIEWS
The house has a guest room downstairs and two upstairs bedrooms in the eaves.
“The rooms upstairs have wonderful views and are bright and airy, with light flooding in through the skylight windows. We use the bedroom next to our master suite as a dressing room, which is a little bit of a luxury, and there is a fabulous new shower room,” says the owner.
One of the property’s best features is undoubtedly the large sunny roof terrace off the master bedroom which is also accessible from the garden via an iron staircase.
“It is completely private and has stunning views across the fields. It gets the sun all day long and it is fabulous, whether in the evenings, when we sit out there with a nice glass of wine, enjoying the last sun of the day, or for a spot of breakfast.”

EXCELLENT POTENTIAL
The Barn also has its own annexe, which offers great flexibility.
“One of the things we loved about the property was how much potential it had. As part of a grand plan for my retirement, we turned the space above the garage into a one-bedroom, self-contained flat to rent out for extra income.
“It could easily be incorporated into the main house as well, offering another two or three bedrooms. It is perfect if you have teenagers as they can have their own space but still be part of family life.”

PEACE AND TRANQUIILITY
Part of the property’s charm is it beautiful rural setting.
“We are surrounded by fields and trees and there is so much wildlife to see and hear, which I love. I think that is one of the things I will miss most, the sense of peace and tranquillity,” he says.
“The garden itself is completely private and is a real sun trap. We spend a lot of time outside, especially in the summer, usually with the grandchildren kicking a football around. But we also love sitting outside, entertaining and having friends around for barbecues; it really is the perfect spot.”

Setting The Scene

The Barn is set on the edge of the pretty village of Diseworth in the Leicestershire countryside and is an enviable position, just a short drive from the cities of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. Set back from the road down a farm driveway, it is surrounded by pretty landscaped gardens. At the front, there is a lawn flanked by evergreen hedges, ornament trees and shrubs.
The back garden, which is completely private, has a large terrace perfect for entertaining, a shaped lawn and plenty of established beds and borders filled with pretty plants and flowers. There are views over the fields and countryside and there is a further garden to the side of the annexe. The double garage has up an over doors and there is ample parking for several cars on the driveway.
