The Vendor's View - The property has been in my family ever since it was first converted from the original barn in 1950 by my father who was an architect. I bought it from him in 1996, but I spent my childhood helping with the building work. I still have the original plans and a total photographic record of the conversion process. In the 1970s the barn was featured in the local gazette as it was such a unique property. My father saw massive potential and the location was ideal.
It's difficult to pinpoint a favourite feature of the house, especially considering it has been my family home for over 60 years. I planted a copper beech tree with my father when we first converted the house, and it is now absolutely beautiful, being about 60ft high now.
I really like the fact that all of the main accommodation is on the first floor, while the ground floor is home to the double garage and workshop along with three guest bedrooms, bathroom, utility and wine room. This allows the master bedroom to overlook the front garden and have a degree of seclusion. The main staircase is in a sort of atrium featuring a floor to ceiling window and galleried landing. There is also a balcony off the main lounge, which is a lovely place to sit out in the sunshine with a cup of coffee or glass of wine.
Being completely detached with a walled garden gives a real sense of privacy, but the Barn is easily accessible thanks to the Ramsgate Road, which was constructed in the late 90s. There are shops and other amenities in nearby Ramsgate and Broadstairs, both of which are a short drive away, with a Post Office/general store around the corner.
The different levels and open staircases are lovely and it has been a great place to entertain in, but the many steps mean this house would be better suited to a family with older children. I would love to keep the house, but now I am getting older it is getting a little more difficult for me to maintain. We are now relocating to be closer to our family.
